Discovered "among the many papers which Dumbledore left in his will to the Hogwarts Archives," the venerable wizard's ruminations on the Tales allow today's readers to place them in the context of 16th century Muggle society, even allowing that "Beedle was somewhat out of step with his times in preaching a message of brotherly love for Muggles" during the era of witch hunts that would eventually drive the wizarding community into self-imposed exile. In fact, versions of the same stories told in wizarding households would shock many for their uncharitable treatment of their Muggle characters.

Professor Dumbledore also includes fascinating historical backstory, including tidbits such as the history and pursuit of magic wands, a brief comment on the Dark Arts and its practitioners, and the struggles with censorship that eventually led "a certain Beatrix Bloxam" to cleanse the Tales of "much of the darker themes that she found distasteful," forever altering the meaning of the stories for their Muggle audience. Dumbledore also allows us a glimpse of his personal relationship to the Tales, remarking that it was through "Babbity Rabbity and Her Cackling Stump" that "many of us [wizards] first discovered that magic could not bring back the dead."

Both a wise and delightful addition to the Harry Potter canon, this new translation of The Tales of Beedle the Bard is all that fans could hope for and more--and an essential volume for the libraries of Muggles, wizards, and witches, both young and old.

There is no easy way to define the experience of seeing, holding, or reading J.K. Rowling's The Tales of Beedle the Bard, so let's just start with one word: "Whoa." The very fact of its existence (an artifact pulled straight out of a novel) is magical, not to mention the facts that only seven copies exist in all the world and each of the never-before-told tales is handwritten and illustrated by J.K. Rowling herself (and it's quite clear from the first few pages that she has some skill as an artist). Rowling's handwriting is like the familiar scrawl of a favorite aunt--it's not hard to read, but it does require attention--allowing you to take it slow and savor the mystery of each next word.

So how do you review one of the most remarkable tomes you've ever had the pleasure of opening? You just turn each page and allow yourself to be swept away by each story. You soak up the simple tales that read like Aesop's fables and echo the themes of the series; you follow every dip and curve of Rowling's handwriting and revel in every detail that makes the book unique--a slight darkening of a letter here, a place where the writing nearly runs off the page there. There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

* The introduction of the Horcrux.
* Molly Weasley asking Arthur Weasley about his "dearest ambition. "Rowling has always been great at revealing little intriguing bits about her characters at a time, and Arthur’s answer "to find out how airplanes stay up" reminds us about his obsession with Muggles.
* Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore, and more time spent with the fascinating and dangerous pensieve, arguably one of Rowling’s most ingenious inventions.
* Fred and George Weasley’s Joke Shop, and the slogan: "Why Are You Worrying About You-Know-Who? You Should Be Worrying About U-NO-POO--the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping the Nation!"
* Luna's Quidditch commentary. Rowling created scores of Luna Lovegood fans with hilarious and bizarre commentary from the most unlikely Quidditch commentator.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

* The revelation of Snape's nature (especially Snape’s Patronus and the emotion behind it). It serves as a reminder that it is love (requited or not) in all its forms that drives many of our actions.
* Harry asking if the conversation with Dumbledore was real or happening in his head, and Dumbledore responding "Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?"
* Ron gifting Harry a book on dating witches, a subtle reminder that they are still teens, after all.

Grade 4 Up—Muggles grow up with Grimm's fairy tales; wizarding children grow up with Tales of Beedle the Bard. The Bard's book is a collection of five tales, bequeathed to Hermione Granger by Professor Dumbledore. The passing of the book into her hands was intended to be both "entertaining and instructive." As in all good mysteries, information contained within its pages provided Hermione with clues essential to helping Harry in the series' last installment. In particular, "The Tale of Three Brothers" describes how three magical items appeared after siblings cleverly cheat death. It is these items that play a pivotal role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Scholastic, 2007). Those hoping to re-create the hours of pleasure spent curled up with a J.K. It is easy to be cynical about The Tales of Beedle the Bard. Harry Potter fans may see it as a inadequate substitute for the delayed release of the film version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Muggles—you ordinary, nonmagical humans—may wonder why another Hogwarts book is necessary, even if one of the stories in this collection, "The Tale of the Three Brothers," plays an important role in the final battle between Harry and Voldemort (in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). But critics found much in this book for even nonfans to admire—from the subtle moral messages of the tales to the voice which Rowling allows to emerge in the tongue-in-cheek commentaries. A few critics commented that the collection lacks Rowling's usual charm and originality, but most fans will be happy to have a few more moments with Dumbledore.

This is a great collection of stories that is part of the Harry Potter universe, and if you love Harry Potter, then this book is a definate must read! I won't give spoilers, but if you read the HP series, then this book has a large part in it.

quick little tales

this is just a short fairy tale book, it's almost like a notes for JK Rowling for her larger book. They are simple tales and while cute, they aren't fully or necessarily developed stories. Just short, quick, and ok. If you're looking for intense HP action or characters, this isn't it. If you go in with a "let's hear just some stories" then you're in for a treat.

I've grown up being a fan of the Harry Potter series and this book was a must have when it first came out I have two copies. I recently bought this one as a baby shower book instead of card gift. Every kid should be introduced to the magical world and what better way than in some fairy tales to teach life lessons that just happen to have magic on them

Marbury is the daughter of Charles Orvis, founder of the famous fly-fishing tackle company that is still a leading name in top-quality gear. In 1890, Marbury solicited information from seasoned anglers from coast-to-coast on their favorite flies and compiled the results in this volume, released two years later. It offers descriptions and reproductions of 300 flies, broken down by geographic area and fishing conditions. Though more than a century has passed, these patterns remain effective for catching trout.

In 1890, Mary Orvis Marbury - daughter of the founder of The Orvis Company - wrote to anglers all over the country soliciting information on their favorite flies and how they were to be made and used. Her inquiries resulted in publishable responses from more than two hundred fly fishermen in thirty-eight states. Marbury compiled these responses to form this book, first published in 1892. Favorite Flies went through nine printings by 1896 - a fishing best-seller even by today's standards. With its clear descriptions of nearly 300 flies, accompanied by fascinating - and expert - advice on their use, this definitive compilation sounds as startlingly current today as it did over a century ago. letters from the nineteenth century

My interest in this book began while researching in Ray Bergman's (_Trout_) the deer fly that was popular a generation ago. However, my gains from this book exceed that limited purpose.
This book offers beautiful drawings of 290 flies that were popular years before Norman Maclean (author of _A River Runs Through It_) was born. That is, it helps ground the reader in some of the traditions of fly fishing that were well established before the production of some of the literature that catalyzed the recent explosion of interest in angling with the long rod.
The bulk of this book consists of letters written by hundreds of anglers from across North America. These letters list favorite flies, some tying instructions, and many gems of wisdom. The author organized these letters, added information about the history of many flies, and put together excerpts from angling literature of previous centuries. The letters were written in response to a set of questions, some of which are of less concern today. But, other concerns remain pertinent. Many letters address the relationship between fly selection a presentation, for example. Letters from the past are the raw materials of history: in this case of specific waters. Judging from the three letters from my home town, for instance, even in the 1890s the Spokane River was a challenge with a fly.
The republication of this book makes a classic affordable and accessible. But, the modern reader might have found some benefit from an editor's introduction that illuminates some of the history of this work's popularity and use, as well as offering some clarification of tying methods and materials of the nineteenth century.

It is the essential volume that contains letters in response to Mary Orvis Marbury's letters to fishermen she knew that asked about their favorite flies and how they were made.

This 527 page volume contains 32 color plates of flies from the mid 19th century which helps add visuals the the favored flies.

If you enjoy fly fishing or reading about fly fishing, this book is a must.

Classic volume but a flawed resproduction

This version of Favorite Flies is a reproduction of the original text - and essentially looks like a photocopy. Some pages are slightly illegible and there are no color plates of the flies. There is another version of this title that is much better.

Keep this one in your Library, it is difficult to find

The content is very clear, the exercises are complete and there are lots of examples. I specially like the cases based on real businesses. I used this book with an Advanced Finance class of my MBA program.
For those who like modeling there is a section dedicated to LP, IP and GP, very well explained but no Excel or LINDO solutions though.
If you are one that have fun with decision sciences, you can go ahead and solve them using solver or LINDO.
Overall, I recommend it for those looking to keep a good Capital Budgeting book.

Hard to find, keep it on your Library

How can she admit that historical, mythological and archaeological evidence suggests that it was these northern people who brought with them the concepts of light as good and dark as evil (very possibly the symbolism of their racial attitudes toward the darker people of the southern areas) and of a supreme male deity; but not admit that the Goddess of theses Black people was also Black before they and She were conquered by White people (i.e., Indo-Europeans). Whether this failing was accidental or intentional is irrelevant, yet one could assume that the Goddesses would originally resemble the people who worship them. According to Albert Churchward, the earliest members of the human race appeared in the interior of the African continent about two million years ago, then from the region of the Great Lakes they spread over the entire continent. Groups of these early men wandered down the Nile Valley, settled in Egypt, and then later dispersed themselves to all parts of the world...As these early Africans wandered over the world, they differentiated into the various human subspecies that now inhabit our planet. The men who remained in the tropical and equatorial regions retained their dark complexions, whereas those that settled in the temperate zones lost a portion of their dusky pigmentation and developed a fairer skin. Provided that the original racial profile of the Nile, Indus, and Tigris-Euphrates River Valley as well as the Aegean civilizations has been clandestinely confirmed as Black/African, then the female divinities worshipped in these civilizations should also logically be Black/African. Good information but highly repetitive

This book has a lot of good information from a lot of great sources, many known scholars. The author does not do much in the way of offering his own opinion or perspective, though, it is mostly a copy of other scholars organized for the reader to put together. So I give this three stars for the quality of the information, I would have given the book more stars but the author is HIGHLY repetitive. He repeats over and over and over the same information and the same quotes and also due to lack of editing, there are sentences and whole paragraphs that are repeated one right after the other. I was not at all impressed with the editing or the senseless repetition. Without all of that, the book would have been half the size leading me to wonder whether the author purposely repeated large quantities of information just to make the book longer. Either way, the information makes the price worth it, but be prepared to either re-read information or skip over it for the 3rd or 4th time.

I found Professor Gibson's "tree-free ebook" very in-depth and replete with well-documented references from many educators, and scholars that I know as well as a few that bought "new" enlightenment. I appreciate his scholarship and the re-telling of a her story that must never be forgotten nor relegated to the abyss of amnesia-tic forgetfulness. In addition, I was also impressed with the fact that a male could affably spin this truth w/o bias, prejudice or hidden agenda. Therefore, I highly recommend this ebook to all truth seekers, like myself.

The authors describe the grant-seeking cycle in five parts: 1) learn - about your organization, your community and your potential funders; 2) match - your needs with the funder's interests and performance; 3) invite - the funder, through the proposal, to invest in the organization and the community; 4) follow up - on the program and the partnership; and 5) evaluate - the grant-seeking process to fine tune it before renewing the cycle.
They take the time to dispel many grant world myths, including "All you need is one well-written grant proposal" and "You need to 'know someone' to get a grant." They even point out the basic necessities for operating a grant-seeking office -- mercifully low-tech and manageable.
Quickly, though, they get to pre-writing part of the process. Proposal writers know that much time is spent learning about the organization, its programs and plans, sometimes developing programs or shaping them to enhance their appeal to funders, and collecting information and support materials to satisfy the donor and dramatize the project. The Browns' emphasis on what they could call the "discovery phase" is very well placed. Their checklist of questions for interviewing the CEO, the program director, and staff assures solid internal research. The answers to those questions become the backbone of the finished proposal.
Chapters on collecting, developing and refreshing support materials, and program, donor, and grants management files have excellent ideas for simplifying work and improving the delivery of quality of information. The authors' recommendations on managing information in the office are surprisingly simple. Cultivate their habits of keeping only what is important, and completing related tasks together (filling a "to read" file or saving leads for a morning of electronic research) to maximize efficiency. These systems definitely work. My office has already adopted their deadline cards, organizational resume, and the filing and record keeping ideas. Check the back of the book for sample forms and an application.
The section on maintaining relationships with funders may be a bit too subtle for some newcomers, so let me emphasize the importance of disciplined relationship management. This is the beginning of a long-term partnership with the donor: attend to it if you hope it will flourish. So use their "follow-up form" and funder communication ideas to guide you. It is far easier to keep a funder than to get a funder.
How about sustaining momentum in a busy office? The authors wisely recommend annual reviews of grant-seeking efforts and staff summits that prioritize projects and define staff responsibilities in proposal preparation. Never underestimate the importance of non-development staff in an organization. Their ideas, information, and support are critical for success. A little internal public relations through periodic review meetings and regular, but brief, reports to staff will foster a team atmosphere that helps get good work done for everyone.
Demystifying Grant Seeking is a very fine combination of Larissa Golden Brown's fundraising successes and Martin John Brown's writing abilities (they probably share those, too). Demystified!

For anyone entering the realm of grant seeking for non profits - or seeking more effective ways to do their job - Demystifying Grant Seeking is a powerful tool. This book takes the reader through the steps of setting up a usable office, making matches between agencies and foundations, writing grant applications, evaluating the process and doing it all again, tighter, quicker, better. The authors use one agency as an example, taking their audience through the entire process. No question is left unanswered, and all questions are answered patiently, graciously, and in easily understood language. This book is a great resource.

Very comprehensive

I am new to the grant writing field. I started my education by reading this book. I found it very informative, but easy to follow. The book is not only theoretical, but offers a great deal of "hands on" advice, including sample forms, grants, etc. The writing style was straighforward and professional. I found the book to be an excellent way to start gaining a practical understanding of this field.

A systematic approach to grants ... and a good read, too

This book presents a systematic approach that begins with identifying your internal needs and moves through the process of research, proposal development, and outreach to funders. Myths are addressed along the way; for example, grants are not "something for nothing," but rather "rational deals between colleagues." A good read filled with specific, hands-on advice.
