A Vibrant Book by a Vibrant Man

I could not put this book down. Actually, I bought it on Kindle first, but I have since ordered a hard copy for my library.

This is a vibrant book by a vibrant man (although he did have help from a ghost writer). He lead a remarkable devil-may-care life, but under the surface, he had the soul of a writer and a desire to do more with his sharp intellect. But drinking dulls the wit and robs ambition. I have since read his published novels and he is quite a talented story-teller. In the films preceding his death, he shows his potential for becoming a serious character actor of high caliber. Who knows what fine things he may have written or what complex roles he may acted had he lived longer and with fewer demons?

Truly an incredibly gifted individual, and, despite his matinee idol status, one who was greatly under-appreciated in his own time both for his acting and his writing, Few have ever had his compelling presence on film, nor the vigor and joie de vivre that fairly leap out at you, especially in his earlier films.

Flynn died 4 months before I was even born, but as I have gotten to know him through his words and his films, I find myself mourning the loss of one who Olivia deHavilland once called "a beautiful man," and the life so tragically cut short by his own excesses. His last recorded words were, "I've had a hell of a life and I don't regret a single moment of it." And I've had a hell of a time watching it all unfold in his movies, novels and now, his autobiography. Rest in peace, Mr. Flynn. Although, knowing him, he is in heaven carousing with the archangels. Or, maybe sword-fighting with the Devil himself.

Best Bio I've ever read. I was amazed, shocked and I've never laughed out loud so many times b4 reading a bio...superb!!!

One of the very BEST autobiographies I've ever read. The adventures, action, humor and tragedies depict Mr. Flynn's incredible life which was actually more exciting off screen than in many of his terrific movies. A MUST read for any fan of Mr. Flynn and after the read you will be more impressed with who he really was and his accomplishments that no one could know without reading his extremely well-written bio!!

You won't be able to put it down

This is probably the most enjoyable book I've ever read. Really. Mr. Flynn tells us the story of a life filled with adventure, emotional intensity, and humor. He also manages to convey the grittiness and desperation of his life at times, but he tells all it with dignity and style.

He has the ability to to write so that you see it all, in your mind's eye, as if you were there right along with him. More importantly, as he takes you on his journey, he brings you to feel what he was feeling when it was happening to him.

Want to go a step further? You can really see Mandarin House, in Macau, China, where he gambled with a girl he met named Ting Ling. Just Google it. Want to see the hotel where Lili, his mad wife, threw a flower pot off the balcony at him on the street below? Google the Plaza Athenee, in Paris. It looks like a nice place, with wide balconies full of flower pots.

I especially liked the part in the book where as a young man, he meets his life long friend Hermann, and they go from New Guinea to London on cargo ships, trains, and anything that will get them closer to their destination. Along the way they get rich, and become penniless, over and over again.

Another thing that makes this book a joy to read is that Flynn is a man of consciences, who does unconscionable things to survive. He was able to adapt to the circumstances he found himself in very well.

He was a man who lived life without limits, but that takes a toll.

When he died at age fifty he had the body of an eighty year old.

So, who was Errol Flynn? He describes himself as a desperate and hard man doing what he had to, to get on. I'll take him at his word on that.

A brilliant idea!

Many management books prescribe one management method as the cure-all which would resolve all problems. Others suggest that one management philosophy is the only one appropriate for a given organization. This book suggests that there are several basic management philosophies, and that organizations go through different cycles with a different managerial approach being correct for each stage in the cycle. The best managers are those who are able to determine the best approach at a given time, use it until it is no longer needed, then switch to the appropriate new strategy. I could have wished for more depth, but still found the book worthwhile. I'd also like to have seen more on becoming a "master manager", but that seems to have been reserved for another book!

Title says it all

Simon Pooni was a regular kid once, captain of the school basketball team, until something life changing happened to him - he contracted multiple sclerosis. Confined to a wheelchair and barely able to use crutches his future looks bleak. That is until a space monkey appears out of nowhere and gives him superpowers! Gone is Simon Pooni, Superior is here!

In a twist on the body swapping premise made famous by "Big" and "Freaky Friday", a disabled boy finds himself with a new body that not only looks exactly like his favourite fictional superhero but can fly, has super strength, super speed, laser vision, the whole lot! Except the space monkey is not who he appears and Simon is about to realise the true cost of a wish fulfilled.

Mark Millar writes a great story most of us who read superhero comics have dreamt of - what would it be like to have superpowers? But more than showing the benefits of having someone like Superior in real life - stopping terrorism, averting natural disasters, saving millions of lives - Millar does a fine job of putting a disease that can afflict anyone, multiple sclerosis, in the spotlight.

One of the best lines in the book is when Simon becomes Superior and says something like "Looking back, I could fly, I had super strength, I could shoot lasers from my eyes, but when people ask me what I liked best about being a superhero?, it was being able to move my toes again". It's a heart-breaking snapshot of what people with MS must feel like every day. The tribute to Christopher Reeve at the back is touching too.

But enough touchy-feely stuff, has the book got the action superhero fans crave? Of course, it's Mark "Ultimates" Millar at the helm. Superior finds his own Lex Luthor (the book is a very thinly veiled riff on Superman) and huge battle scenes commence, skilfully drawn by Lenil Yu who did great work with Millar on their last collaboration, "Ultimate Avengers".

It's a really fun book to read but, in contrast to Millar's "Nemesis" which was out this time last year, "Superior" has a lot of heart to it and you find yourself rooting for Simon throughout. A great alternative take on superhero stories, "Superior" is an excellent read.

Average but with great art

In Mark Millar's latest offering that blends elements of the Superman archetype's like Shazam or Prime from Malibu Comics wasn't all that. For me anyways. It was just a very average story that didn't really offer anything new or compelling to the genre. While both very different, I enjoyed Mark Millar's "Nemesis" comic better than this. Leinil Francis Yu's beautiful line work is what really makes this for a somewhat standout read but it ends there. If I had known better I would've just downloaded a digital copy of the first issue before laying down extra dough for this hardcover. Nevertheless, the cinematic visuals are all here & that's pretty much like a Millar trademark. Superior would feel right at home in Marvel's Ultimateverse if you subtract the foul language throughout the book. Again, it just wasn't very interesting but beautifully illustrated & apparently there's rumor of a live action film in the works so perhaps it'll translate better in that medium. C+

Great Read

I heard about Superior from a movie blog a few months back and how they wanted to direct a movie about the comic. I just started getting into to comics (this is actually my first purchased Trade paper back) so I didn't know anything about the story. But when I read the synopsis on the blog I was very intrigued. The whole "space monkey" thing raised my eyebrows. It looked like a great story and when I finally got my hands on it I was right. As soon as I flipped to the first page I was hooked and ended up reading it in 2 days. I wanted to stretched it out so that the story would last longer but I was so into it I couldn't put it down. The whole story is told perfectly and is paced masterful. The characters are very well built and the writing is top notch especially when you get to the action panels. The artwork is great as well as everything is clear and you can see what is going on. By no means is this a complex story or groundbreaking in anyway but that shouldn't stop you from picking this up. If your a fan of underdogs and classic super hero tales from back in the day this is sure to put a smile on your face. If i had a teenage son that wanted a comic for his birthday this is what I would get him.

Dave Baranek (callsign "Bio") was one of 451 young men to receive his Wings of Gold in 1980 as a naval flight officer. Four years later, seasoned by intense training and deployments in the tense confrontations of the cold war, he became the only one of that initial group to rise to become an instructor at the navy's elite Fighter Weapons School. As a Topgun instructor, Bio was responsible for teaching the navy's and Marine Corps's best fighter pilots how to be even better. He schooled them in the classroom and then went head-to-head with them in the skies.

Then, in August 1985, Bio was assigned to combine his day-to-day flight duties with participation in a Pentagon-blessed project to film action footage for a major Hollywood movie focusing on the lives, loves, heartbreaks, and triumphs of young fighter pilots: Top Gun.

Bio soon found himself riding in limousines to attend gala premieres, and being singled out by giggling teenagers and awed schoolboys who recognized the name "Topgun" on his T-shirts. The book ends with his reflections on his career as a skilled naval aviator and his enduring love of flight.

The author is a retired Naval flight officer, who made several cruises aboard various carriers as the radar operator in the back seat of an F-14. One of those cruises included an ejection when the ship’s arresting gear failed to arrest the F-14 before it went overboard. Even more challenging were his two assignments to the Topgun program, the Navy’s elite fighter-training school, first as a student, then in the coveted position of an instructor. During that second assignment, he also helped with the Navy’s support and the flying sequences of the classic movie Top Gun. (See above for the correct spelling.) The author is a straightforward, even plain writer, but he also has an eye for detail, and gives those details in full measure about experiences for which there is an abiding, even devouring, curiosity among aviation buffs. About the Author
Dave "Bio" Baranek enjoyed a successful and satisfying twenty-year career in the United States Navy, starting with assignments to F-14 Tomcat squadrons and later assignment to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Baranek retired from the Navy in 1999 and now works as a defense contractor in the Washington, D.C. area. He lives in Burke, Virginia.

Very Detailed!

If you want to know every detail of being a Top Gun pilot this is the book for you. Dave "Bio" Baranek describes in detail what it is like to be a rear seat radar officer in an F14 and other planes. But rather than just describe life as a pilot he also backs it up with a crash that is downplayed as both pilots survive when the ending could have been much different, his experience as a Top Gun student and instructor and also what it was like during the filming of Top Gun the movie on which he had significant technical and flying involvement. The book specializes in highlighting the redundancy that is required for safety. And probably its highest point is describing in detail the technical nature of the task of a Top Gun instructor and student. But this book is not for everyone and frankly, I'm not sure I would have kept reading if one of his fellow instructors wasn't also a close friend of mine. That's not meant as a negative. I read for entertainment. This book is about detail and those really wanting to know about flying high performance planes for the Navy and it does an exceptional job of this. Just make sure you are ready for a technical book of mundane tasks involved like passing your "murder boards" to be able to instruct your first class and the time necessary to write an upgrade of a class.

These guys are real heroes and incredibly talented and this book demonstrates the talent and commitment necessary to be a top pilot. But it doesn't read as a fast action book but rather a summation of the job of the pilot/instructor.

Accurate account

I had the pleasure of knowing the author, and the cast of characters in the book well. I too was an F-14 RIO who flew F-14s and attended TOPGUN. Bio does a very nice job capturing the life of an F-14 RIO, life in a fighter squadron on and off the carrier and attending TOPGUN as a student. He dives deeper once he is assigned to TOPGUN as an instructor; what was required, how the training was done, what students and instructors experienced, and particularly how complete the environment was on teaching tactics, and how professional the instructors were in teaching their subject areas. At the same time, the language, content and style of the book make it very easy for a complete outsider to follow along and understand. His sidebar boxes with explainations of key areas help guide the reader. Many may enjoy his comments on the making of TOP GUN during his tenure and his role, and those of other instructors in making the movie, and the impact of its release on all of us. I have some other memories of the shooting, but after the release, having attended TOPGUN was repected outside of the Fighter Community, and we were no longer automatically assumed to be in the Air Force as we flew.
As a side note, two of the TOPGUN instructors with Bio went on to get four stars in the Navy.

Bio has captured a piece of history and time very well.

Amazon editions have become inferior.

I have purchased more than 200 books from Amazon over the years and have noticed, lately, that the quality of books has declined. Many books are printed on inferior paper and some books that are supposed to contain photos, such as this one, contain either no photographs or bad quality photos. If you read the inside of the dust jacket of this book you will find the following description: "Complete with more than fifty rare full color photographs of fighter jets in action" . The problem here is that the only photographs of any kind are the 5 small photos on the cover!! It seems that when you purchase books from Amazon, unless you buy them used, you may be purchasing an "Amazon" edition and not necessarily the edition sold in bookstores. I will be returning this book, just as I recently returned "Near Misses: A Naval Aviator's Story" because each page contained the publisher's name and logo in large letters printed diagonally across every single page, making the book unreadable. In the future I will purchase my books elsewhere. UPDATE.....I have since purchased the softcover edition, complete with photos, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Changed my rating to 5 stars.
