Great book

Ricci an independent woman who loves to fix things, oh and run her Manhattan apartment complex, is convinced by her best friend Alicia to rent an apartment to Alicia's new boss who is transferring to NY from LA. Tara (Ricci's new tenant) comes with baggage and an attitude which doesn't make their first meeting a happy one. Could this actually be love?

A great first full length book by this author, I was very glad to have stumbled upon. The two main characters feel real, and their complexities and hang up's will not let you put this book down. Nothing was rushed in this book, unlike too many other romances, and each character surprised you with each new revelation, and reminded the reader (as in life) not to jump to conclusions about an individual based on rumor or even first impressions.

Pleasant romance

This is a cute romance between two women who initially dislike one another but come to love each other. The characters are likable and so are their friends and family. The author develops them well. There are interesting subplots with the people residing in the building that Ricci owns and manages. The romance is the usual lesbian romance plot but that's OK. How much different can any romance novel be, after all?

My problem is with Ricci who is apparently born and raised in New York but uses British terms and slang. It was jarring and I didn't even understand some of it. I had to stop and ask myself what the author probably meant.It's not just Ricci; the other characters speak British (or whatever country's slang it is), and the author uses foreign slang/terms throughout the narrative. There are also many errors with punctuation and grammar, although the latter could be due to the different English being used. The book could have benefited from an editor or at least a proofreader. The inconsistencies and the lack of editing bring my rating down from what could have been a 5 to 3.

Happy that I purchased this book. It's a fun story with Ricca who owns a building that she rents to a new tenant Tara. Tara has baggage that she has to work through. Ricca's family adds to the fun. Fun book!

Incredible Middle East hostage memoir that deserves a new audience

Incredible memoir by one of the longest held hostages during the Lebanese Civil War, Brian Keenan. Most people have probably forgotten the Lebanon hostages of the late 1980s. Kidnapped by Islamic Jihad in 1986, Brian Keenan spent four and a half years as a western hostage along with several Americans, Brits, Frenchmen and one very lonely Korean. He was the only Irish national in the group and clearly drew strength from his ethnic identity in his confrontations with his fanatical keepers. The result is an existential masterpiece. True, this memoir does start off a bit slow, as if the author didn't know quite where to start, but it picks up pace following the events of his kidnapping. What emerges is a triumph of one decent man's human will over that of his evil, inhumane captors. Given current events in the Middle East, this book deserves a fresh audience. Especially for those who harbor any pretensions about Islamic extremist kindness or decency. Must read for anyone interested in SERE (Survival, Escape, Resistance, Evasion operations), the Middle East, Lebanon, Islamic extremism, and/or the human spirit.

Uplifting

I'd had this book on my bookshelf for many years, having bought it after seeing an excellent review. But I never seemed to get around to reading it - perhaps it would be hard going, a harrowing tale ... Finally, I picked it up. It's an amazing read - you really get to know Keenan, and his companion for much of his incarceration, John McCarthy, and what's more his captors too. (The American hostages they spend time with are less well drawn in many cases) How could we cope in this situation? Keenan tells us exactly how he and McCarthy made it through - nearly five years in his case; more than five for McCarthy. Occasionally, Keenan veers towards becoming a little too cerebral about it all, but then pulls back, leaving us which much to mull over about the strength but also sheer honesty of this man. One of those books where you finish feeling like you have really come to know someone - perhaps more than you know the people in your own life. I closed the book (a little surprised at where it ended ... I wanted more ... but that's Brian) and immediately sought up to date information about Keenan -- to discover that he only recently returned to Lebanon for the first time (see the Times Online, March 08, to complete the journey after you've read the book).

Over the last 20 years, Santiago Calatrava has made literally thousands of drawings and paintings and more than a hundred sculptures. Many of his drawings show the human body - often in motion - alone, or in groups, or in an architectural context. Others show preliminary ideas which lead to constructions, details, sculptures, and buildings.

This book contains a selection of over 200 drawings, water colours and depictions of sculptures, chosen by the architect and the author because they are particularly well-suited to showing the significance of his artistic work as the basis for his architectural designs. A drawing is always the starting point for an entire laboratory of ideas. Many of the themes and forms which Calatrava investigates and develops on this level are subsequently transformed into sculptures and go on to provide the inspiration for his bridges, railway stations, airports, museums and even dining tables.

This volume analyses how Calatrava's creative ideas ripen and develop, from the initial drawings, to the sculptures, finally attaining completion in the realised buildings. At the same time, it examines the interfaces between the fine arts, engineering and architecture.

Disappointing

Being a designer myself, I am very much interested in the thought process and preliminary drawings made by one of the great recent names in the field. I was definitely looking for inspirational drawings and to peer over the shoulder of a great in a similar field to see their process.

What I found instead was the disappointingly simple marks of a pretty amateur water colourist. I'm sure that this might be inspirational and interesting to people outside of visual arts and design, but compared to Arkitekture by Zaha Hadid, which has beautiful 3d renderings, models, pictures of her abstract scultptural work etc, it's woefully inadequate.

I won't be buying another book on his work without seeing it in the flesh and getting a good idea of what's really in there.

For readers who wondered if things were any better in a bustling city, here is the horrifying answer. On the night the moon tilts, 17-year-old Alex and his younger sisters are alone; their mother is at work, and their father is visiting Puerto Rico. No matter how the kids wish, hope, and pray, their parents don’t return. It’s up to Alex to do what’s best. At first that means bartering for food and batteries and avoiding fighting with the rambunctious Julie—especially after sickly Bri is sent to live at a rural convent. Later it means rescuing Julie from rapists and steering her away from the corpses that litter the street, providing food for rats. Religion is one of the strong threads running through the novel. It would have been interesting to see Alex wrestle more with his staunch Catholicism, but in many ways, the Church anchors the plot. The story’s power, as in the companion book, comes from readers’ ability to picture themselves in a similiar situation; everything Pfeffer writes about seems wrenchingly plausible. Enjoyable

This book is well-written, and I again enjoyed the overall story. I say “again,” however, because this book is very similar to its predecessor, “Life As We Knew It.” I knew nothing about “The Dead & The Gone” other than that it is the second book in the “Last Survivors” series. When I began reading, I was surprised to discover that this book didn’t pick up where “Life As We Knew It” left off, but instead went back to the beginning and followed a completely different family in New York as they experienced the same struggles that occurred from the ‘shifting’ of the moon. I will openly admit that I was a bit disappointed that I wouldn’t be continuing on with Miranda’s story. I enjoyed reading her thoughts and experiencing what she experienced along with her. When everything ended as well as it could (all things considered) I was hopeful that her journey would continue and things would just keep getting better. Or, at the very least, that things would continue to be difficult, but that we’d still be able to experience that journey along with her.

So imagine my shock when the narrative changed and I was suddenly hearing about Alex Morales. It was a challenge to adjust to an entire new family, as I had felt like I was part of Miranda’s family, having been with them from the start. Even more, it was challenging to start at the very beginning, right after the moon had been struck, knowing all the terrible things that were to come. Don’t get me wrong, “The Dead & The Gone” was still very good. It was interesting to experience everything from a different perspective, in a different location, with different people and be able to compare their individual journeys. But I will admit (SPOILER ALERT) that the Morales’ journey was even more trying and heartbreaking, in the end. Nevertheless, the entire concept upon which this series resides is extremely interesting, and I will most definitely continue reading the remaining books.

It's up to you (to get out of) New York, New York

"The Dead and the Gone" is book 2 in a 4-book (so far) series by Susan Beth Pfeffer which she has named "The Last Survivors." I knew from book 1 that the other books in this series would be a treat but I didn't expect Book 2 to be even better than the first. Miranda, the heroine of "Life as We Knew It," is revealed to be very lucky. She comes from a family of four (a mother and three children) all of whom are able to survive in a village in northeast Pennsylvania for ten months. Alex Morales, the hero of "The Dead and the Gone," is part of a family of six (he is the second of four children) living on the Upper West Side in Manhattan of which only three members are alive at the end of the book. The parents drown on the first night, as a result of the very high tides that result from the moon being closer, and the death of one of Alex's siblings (I won't say which one) represents the climax of the book.

New York goes to hell in a handbasket; death rises around the protagonists like one of the super-tides pulled by the moon. The collision that pushes the moon closer to the earth takes place in mid-May. By mid-July bodies are being left on the street in the Upper West Side. The last delivery of emergency rations to that part of Manhattan takes place on December 9. The last day chronicled is December 29, by which time New York is almost completely abandoned, as opposed to Howell, Pennsylvania, which still had between a quarter and a sixth of its pre-collision population the following March. Things are worse for Alex than for Miranda because while her family had an enormous stockpile of food, his must leave the house constantly to get food.

I thought both the role of both violence and religion during a period of social breakdown were depicted more realistically in this book than in the first, which is the reason I give this book a full five stars. Alex's family is deeply religious and their faith sustains them both literally (they are fed at the parochial school they attend) and spiritually. God and His representatives on earth become the only people Alex can talk to about what he is going through, as he tries to protect his sisters from the full implications of what is happening. Alex's first sister rarely leaves the house after an ill-fated attempt to join a convent, but his second sister becomes a target of men with base desires and nothing to lose by fulfilling them. You know society hasn't completely broken down, however, because social class becomes even more important than it previously was, with the rich and well-connected not having to creep past dead bodies all the time in their part of New York (apparently Midtown), foreshadowing the fourth book, in which (the reviews tell us) a rigid caste system has set in in Tennessee.

Book 3, "This World we Live In," brings together the surviving characters from Book 1 and Book 2 and I can't wait to read it. Fortunately, I ordered all of the last three books in the series at the same time from Amazon, so I don't have to. Five stars.

Great Story...Stupid Kids????

First things first...I am totally enjoying the 2nd installment of the series. However, as well thought out the author has done regarding the "weather events"....she is in a 180 degree difference when it comes to the people-oriented events.

If you have not read any of these series...stop right here.....buy them...read them...and if you want to come back and read my only challenges...do that...

If you have read the books ...well read on and see if you agree:
I have a hard time believing that there was hardly ever an event where these kids walked out the door in desolated NYC and no "bad people" awaited them. ONCE...that's it...once....and the guy never came back...hmmmmmmm...reality check. But let's explain that off that all the bad people have left that section of NY (where they went is anyone's guess)

But the thing that totally eludes me (and my co-listener, Cynthia) is this.....they are on the 12th floor of an apartment building and are only able to get into a handful of apartments in order to grab whatever food is in there. As the story progresses they are teetering on the edge of starvation. If there were just 5 apartments on each floor there would be 60 apartments. They invaded ..a few.
So let's say there are 50 apartments that they didn't go into because they didn't have keys and the doors were made from steel. Um, uh.....the doors may be steel...but the walls are most likely Dri Wall! If anyone reading this has any experience with DriWall...you simply take a hammer or any thing hard and smash it right in. So here we have three kids starving to death....and all around them are apartments that have no one living in them and most likely a total of one year's food there...and instead they go out hunting for trinkets on dead people and stand in line for 5 hours in the freezing cold waiting to get a bag of food....HUH????

OK...So I pretended I was back in the 70s when I could puff on a magic cigarette and suspend all reality...and I get through this glaring stupidity of these kids..I still LOVE the story!!!
