Maureen Orey is an award-winning international speaker and best-selling author with more than 25 years of experience in management, leadership, training, and career development. She has worked in many industries, including technology, healthcare, construction, hospitality, and education. As President of Workplace Learning & Performance Group, she is dedicated to working with inspired individuals and organizations to help them improve their performance so they can achieve their desired results. Workplace Learning & Performance Group was the 2014 winner of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Award.

Maureen is the best-selling author of Communication Skills Training, published by ASTD Press, as well as the author ofSuccessful Staffing in a Diverse Workplace, published by Richard Chang Associates. This is a must have in any trainers tool box regardless of your experience level

I expected this book to be amazing and it exceeded those expectations by far! Having been a trainer in the Academia arena for many years (and taught communication skills on a college level), I was interested to see what the author was going to bring to the table that was new and fresh. The book started out with a great first ten pages on "How To Use The Book" which made so much sense. This is not just a book that you sit down, read, and then put on the book shelf. In my first read through, I had tons of highlights, dog-eared pages, and bookmarks placed throughout. The author provides a great refresher on why communication is so important within a training setting; something we often forget. Then the book takes you from pre-workshop, workshop, and post-workshop, providing information on training that takes a few hours to multi-day sessions. This book encompasses everything you need from slide info, handouts, room configuration, and so much more. WORTH EVERY PENNY!

I am a big fan of the ATD Workshop Series, and when I saw that Maureen Orey, a Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP), was updating Communication Skills training, I knew I had to have this book. Quoting from the cover, “Includes All the Activities, Handouts, Tools, and Assessments You Need to Create and Deliver Powerful, Effective Training”. From an hour session to a multi-day workshop this book covers it all. I have used parts of this book in several other classes I have designed to stress the importance of communication and tie these classes back to a central message for my clients. Maureen has a succinctly captured the essence of communication skills and put it together in a way that any talent development professional can go from zero to classroom in a matter of days with highly professional presentations and materials. Finally, what you see is not all you get. In addition to the book, it is supported by a web site that contains all the PowerPoint presentations, handouts, and assessments. There is no need to create anything from scratch, or reinvent the wheel if you have this outstanding book.

Peer Instruction is an interactive teaching style that actively involves students in the learning process by focusing attention on underlying concepts through interactive "ConcepTests", reading quizzes, and conceptual exam questions. Results, asse ssed through scores on the Force Concept Inventory and final exams, show that students better understand concepts and perform better on conventional problems in this environment. It can be easily adapted to fit individual lecture styles and used with any textboo k. Eric Mazur's Peer Instruction approach has been successfully field-tested in a variety of settings, most of them quite different from his home campus at Harvard University (e.g., University of Massachusetts--Lowel and Appalachian State Universi ty).

Presents an entirely new approach to introductory physics within a calculus-based conceptual and a mathematical framework. It offers an approach to presenting the material that is more gradual than existing books on the subject. "Peer Instruction: A User's Manual" develops the full conceptual framework of each chapter within the first section of that chapter while addressing questions common to that topic. The material in this section concentrates on the underlying ideas and paints the big picture, whenever possible without equations. The second part of each chapter then develops the rigorous mathematical framework linked to the material presented in the first part. Each chapter also includes a short set of qualitative, conceptual questions at the end of the first section designed to strengthen the focus on the conceptual framework and facilitate understanding of the mathematical framework. The book is written in a lively, engaging style that anticipates the questions readers will have, articulates them, and answers them in a direct dialogue with the reader. A highschool physics teacher's review.

If you have a class of 30,40,50 or more, and/or you have problems in terms of participation of your students in lessons, or if you would like to create useful discussions in your class by which your students can develop their conceptual understanding of physics; this book will serve as a great source. There are lots of materials that can be used in the class, along with standard tests such as FCI, MBT. Eric Mazur's Peer Instruction method is a research based well functioning teaching method. I have been using the materials in my highschool physics instructions, and seen the effectiveness of them. For example, well designed quizzes which I used to test reading assignments were very useful. Highly recommended for physics teachers.

important and influential, but inaccurate and not worth paying for

This book described a teaching technique that was considered innovative in 1996, and it was highly influential.

It has some very sensible recommendations: Don't introduce material in lecture form, but make students read the book for that purpose (and use reading quizzes to enforce that). Test concepts and not just calculations.

It has a useful survey of the relevant pedagogical literature as of 1996, including data showing that following the book's recommendations improves conceptual understanding without hurting students' problem-solving abilities.

Most of the book consists of a collection of resources to be used in teaching using the technique it advocates.

None of this, however, is a valid reason to pay $35 for this book in the year 2012. The relevant pedagogical research from that era can basically be found in one paper:

Hake, "Interactive Engagement Versus Traditional Methods: a Six-Thousand Student Survey of Mechanics Test Data for Introductory Physics Courses, Am. J. of Phys, 66 (1997) 64

More recent pedagogical research along the same lines is all available online for free from authors such as Hake and Halloun.

The resources included in the book are not worth paying money for. You can get similar "conceptest" items at the Project Galileo web site. The standardized diagnostic tests described in the book are available for free in more convenient form if you contact the authors of the tests, and these tests have been updated and improved as a result of ongoing research since 1996. Furthermore, the resources in the book are full of errors, such as multiple-choice conceptest questions that are formatted such that there is no correct answer, and that therefore can't be used successfully for the teaching technique being advocated.

The book has 252 pages of which 42 contain content and the remainder is resources. As the accompanying CD also contains all the resources, I wondered why 200 pages of the book was used for this. I expected more for the price.
The peer instruction approach is certainly a valuable method, and it is worth seeing his particular model for lessons. The questions provided are very similar to those on IB exams--which combine a very good blend of conceptual questions, and problem solving with estimations and assumptions--as such I already had very good resources in this regard. Paul Hewitt's textbook and worksheets are at a similar level of difficulty and have much to offer in terms of forming a conceptual basis for physics understanding.

This collection of essays makes easy but critical reading for those wishing to understand the resistance to and methods used to deny the validity of climate science. The authors are fair minded enough to acknowledge that Exxon made some significant contributions to climate science and as a company, were seeking to deal with the problem of increased carbon emissions. But, as the title suggests, the corporate leadership the company demonstrated in the late 1970s ran up against the challenge of falling profits, and so the company did not take the high road. For this they need to be publicly exposed, as this book does.

An interesting dimension for me is in the divergent cultures within Exxon at the time. Major companies are rarely ideological monoliths; they are usually collections of competing agendas. However, it is clear that the environmental responsibility message did not filter through to the next generation of corporate executives, much to the shame of Exxon. It could have taken the road to corporate leadership but failed. It is not just the company who is worse off for this, it is the colossal task facing the world community to stem the tide of climate damaging emissions that Exxon, and companies like them, are largely responsible for.

The message of the book: Exxon knew that its emissions would raise the temperature of the planet, and they knew that this could cause enormous challenges, if not make the world uninhabitable for the types of societies we have built. But they took the cheap road and failed in moral leadership. Shame on them.

Final comment on the book; because it is a collection of essays, the narrative does not flow as well as it could. Therefore as a literary piece it is not going to win any prizes. But as an expose, it is very good.

A must read for climate skeptics and anyone interested in climate justice

This book is extremely important. Exxon's role in climate denial and the irrevocable harm that they have knowingly been a leading contributor to must become common knowledge. As legal action is brought to this company public awareness and pressure will play a key role in what could be a pivotal moment in the history of the fossil fuel industry and a possible watershed moment for climate justice.

This expose documents in great detail how Exxon Mobile covered-up the fact that they've known for decades that their product causes climate change. This book is going to shake things up. In fact, it already has, as evidenced by today's news (November 5, 2015) that the New York state attorney general has launched an investigation into the giant corporation's deceptive practices. The legal implications are immense, and not just for Exxon Mobile.

About the Author
Caroline Myss was born on December 2, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois. She received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana in 1974. During her career as a journalist, she interviewed Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, the author of the book, On Death and Dying, which inspired her to pursue a master's degree in theology from Mundelein College, which she completed in 1979. She also studied intuition and energy medicine at Greenwich University. In 1982, she started giving medical intuitive readings and has been in the field of energy medicine and human consciousness for 20 years. She specializes in assisting people in understanding the emotional, psychological, and physical reasons why their bodies have developed an illness. She has written numerous books including Anatomy of the Spirit; Why People Don't Heal and How They Can; Sacred Contracts; Entering the Castle; and Defy Gravity: Healing Beyond the Bounds of Reason.

modern mysticism--for joining heaven and earth within you

Described as Advanced it means exactly that. But, most chapters in the series of 9 CDs are easy to follow and really don't need too much previous spiritual reading. The material reveals what the listener is ready to hear no matter the stage of a person's inner development. Listen to chapters that appeal most to you. And when they appeal to you. You will be sure to learn something you've never heard before, gain new perspective you've never had before. And if you were to listen to the lessons again at another time, you will be sure to still pick up new insight only because your own experiences and spiritual maturity add to the experience of listening to this series.
Mysticism is being able to see the unseen world---to see the invisible world. Mysticim is deeply cultivated insight. Carolyn Myss teaches you through Advanced Energy Anatomy ways to cultivate your insight and presents mystical insight in easy to understand monologue. She is truly a leading teacher of our times. Her speech is easy to follow and her samples are always practical and involving.
The introduction and discussion archetypes can help you understand your self better and your relationships with others and the world better.
The lessons on creativity and spiritual vocations are inspiring. Being able to see your creativity and your dreams interwoven and inseparable can help you understand yourself better and seek fulfillment...at the same time realizing your divine potential.
The discussion on survival, creative and visionary intuition was only one of my favorite new discoveries.
For those who seek to heal themselves and maybe even others, this audio set is very, very enlightening.
