Rids you of pain you didn't know was muscular!

This book turns the idea of long-held, static stretches on its head. The stretching methods shown are not relaxing and can cause the opposing muscle groups to also need stretching -- but the results are nothing short of astonishing for sports injuries and even for the muscle tightness that accompanies arthritis.

The book is grouped into sections for the shoulder, elbow/wrist/arm/hand, neck, hip/knee, back/trunk, and ankle/foot. All stretches are shown in photographs in at least two stages, those you do by yourself, and those one would assist another with are shown in separate sections of the book.

It is as much a text as a how-to book. It could be more user-friendly, (you may need to re-read the instructions several times) but the book is comprehensive, and the stretches are ingenious. This book is definitely worth the investment not just for athletes, but anybody with aches and pains.

Effective stretching for every body

This book has everything you need (other than a towel/stretch strap) to get started with a great stretching program. If you follow these stretches with the directions, you will not injure yourself while stretching.

The pictures show each stretch and variation clearly, plus there are written directions describing each move.

The book opens flat and will stay that way, which is very helpful for keeping your place.

I am a massage therapist, so my arms get very tight from work. The first time I went through the stretching protocol for elbows, wrists, and fingers I felt wonderful. It was almost as though I had received a deep massage, but I didn't hurt...it was great. Now I'm learning this to use on some of my clients that are particularly tight. Stretching affects the whole muscle rather than just a part of it at a time (like massage); so for people who are particularly bound up, stretching oftentimes can give a greater release overall before I work on the individual muscles.

There are a couple of areas I would like to see improvements though. 1.) I wish they would update the book to give some of the more recent scientific research that explains the mechanics and physiology behind why this type of stretching is so effective, 2.) There should be pictures of the muscles by layer, so you know more easily which stretches should be done in which order if you are not going to do all of the stretches for a body part. The stretches are supposed to release the fascia from superficial to deep; I believe some pictures of the muscles shown as cross-sections for each area from superficial to deep would be very helpful.

That said, overall it is a great book that I would highly recommend to anyone needing to stretch out an area of overuse, previous injury, or otherwise.

A must for preventing & rehabilitating injuries!

Aaron Mattes' method of stretching could prevent countless injuries and rehabilitate others who have given up hope. I also recommend the Whartons Stretch book, which is another presentation of this same method. I have seen impressive results in a number of injury rehabilitation situations, in a short period of time. I also recommend the video. It takes time and dedication to learn these stretching routines, but it is worthwhile (and you will feel great!). If you can locate a Personal Trainer or Certified Massage Therapist who is knowledgeable in this method to help you learn the routines, and then use the book for reference, you'll have the best of both worlds.

Six Page Bios of Jazz Guitar Personalities

I was disappointed when I received this book in the mail. I wished it was a "click to look inside" book so I could have known. Wolf Marshall has written a number of excellent "Signature Riff" books on many of the artists profiled in this book. I thought that maybe this was a "best of" those books or a teaser to get you into an artist more deeply so you'll want to buy the original book. Sounds good to me! Well the answer is: Nope.

This book has short 4-6 page bios of each artist and lists essential recordings or filmed performances. That is nice and all but not as relevant in the age of Wikipedia and the Internet where this information can be drawn up in mere seconds. You then get three licks in the style of the performer with a thin paragraph description of each. There is no CD recording of the licks either which makes no sense. This book seems to be geared to the fan of jazz guitar so they would need as much help as possible to enjoy this book. A better player would skip it entirely.

I thought this was going to be a historical approach to jazz guitar through the masters that created the history along with a good lesson to learn from each performer. Instead we get 3 quick licks and then we're on to the next chapter. Fewer guitarists and deeper content would have saved this book. To cover all the artists he can only scratch the surface.

I bought this on Wolf Marshall's reputation but there isn't enough guitar knowledge in the book to recommend it.

Too Basic for the Seasoned Engineer. Recommend: "Guide to Energy Management"

This book would be O.K. for an engineer just finding his/her way, it provides a good basic overview. As a licensed and LEED certified mechanical engineer, I bought this book to serve as a refresher in preparation to retest for the C.E.M, for reinstatement. After reading it cover to cover, I don't feel as though I got what I was expecting from this book. Update: The book to buy is "Guide to Energy Management", by Capehart, Turner and Kennedy.

I was expecting the new edition to have updated a few things, for example LEDs are still neglected in the lighting sections.

All in all it's still a good reference manual. The visual presentation of the material is disturbing; it's full of copy/pasted excel tables in low resolution.

Simply put this is a wonderful book. It guides the reader along a pathway of awareness that lays out solid reasons why confidence is important, behaviors that kill confidence, teaches you strong ways in which you can build confidence and gives you assessment guidelines to let you know the difference. Overall the book was the quick wonderful kick in my ass I needed to get myself on the right track. Ive read a couple of Patrick's books now and each one gives me a handful of golden nuggets I can take into my everyday life. Thanks Patrick!!

Paper thin and obvious explanations

I really hope this was a joke. This book was more like a phamphlet. It's about fifty pages with extremely large print and the writing is nothing beyond the obvious. I hope this wasn't an actual writer's attempt to write a book. I would feel better knowing it was intended to be a scam to rip people off.
