Ian Johnston does it again!

Originally published in 2000 as "Ships for A Nation," this revised edition forms part of a trilogy of books on the former Clydebank shipyard by Ian Johnston, which also includes A Shipyard at War and Clydebank Battlecruisers. Taking advantage of the massive number of preserved photographs and internal documents preserved by the Scottish National Archives, this book presents an in-depth history of the yard's life. From the formation of J&G Thomson in 1847, to the opening of the Clydebank yard in 1871, acquisition by John Brown & Co in 1899, the triumphs of the 20th century, to the yard's demise in 1972, this book is epic in scope. Although it focuses on a single shipyard, it essentially depicts the rise and fall of British heavy industry through the lens of Clydebank.

Although the previous reviewer bemoaned the lack of ocean liner coverage, I think this book does a good job providing all of the yard's most famous ships a fairly equitable amount of space. The three Cunard Queens receive a good chunk of space, as do the Lusitania, Aquitania, and many of the more famous warships built there. Along with liners and battlecruisers, we also get plenty of material on the yard's more mundane output, including paddle steamers, cargo ships, destroyers, oil tankers, and yachts. The financial, managerial, and manpower issues which plagued the yard even in the best of times are also front and center, along with the yard's machinery output, and the impact of local and national politics. This book isn't just about big ships and big machines; rather, it puts Clydebank in the context of a complex and constantly involving political, industrial, and economic situation.

The photographs and illustrations, once again, are a highlight. Like Johnston's other works, many of them are scanned directly from the original glass plate negatives, and are so sharp you can count the rivets on ships' hulls. I've always loved shots of shipyards "in action," and some of the shots here are so vivid you can almost hear the pounding of riveting guns. There's also a large number of period engravings, paintings, maps, and diagrams, along with photographs of key personalities. Ian Johnston has provided a number of crisp layout plans, showing the yard's evolution and some of the aborted plans put forward in the 50s and 60s. There's also nine very useful appendixes. These include biographies of yard managers, a list of every ship built at the yard with basic specifications, a list of the emergency repairs and conversions carried out during WWII, scale profile views of famous Clydebank ships, and profit and loss statistics.

Although it's exceptionally ambitious and wonderfully illustrated, "Ships for All Nations" isn't perfect. The writing is rather dry and gets bogged down by minute financial and managerial asides, although it's probably my fault for being more interested in shipbuilding. The editing could have used a bit of polishing; many direct quotations aren't properly indented, making it difficult to tell exactly where they begin and end. Ships' names are frequently not italicized (a pet peeve of mine.) Most of the photographs are excellently reproduced, but some of them appear to have gone through a de-graining process which has left them soft and muddy looking.

Although you need to have a serious interest in bulkheads, steam turbines, and floppy-hatted foremen to really appreciate it, this is yet another excellent book by Ian Johnston. I'm sure serious maritime buffs will love it, flaws and all. If Mr. Johnston is reading this, I'm still game for a photographic scrapbook focusing on the construction of the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth.

Definitely recommended

A spectacularly interesting history.

Some have complained how much of the book is about business and not about ships, and I can sympathize. And yet it is exactly this sort of information--who were the Thomson brothers, exactly, what were their fiscal attitudes, how did the banks and shareholders respond--that is likely not to appear in histories aimed at "buffs"; whereas the history of capital investment, of corporate planning, of labor disputes, of government and macropolitical and macroeconomic factors, really are needed to understand the rise and the fall of the British shipbuilding industry.

Although James Thomson was quite prodigal in personality, and led his firm into many deficit years, it seems clear that without his foresight, his ambitious expansion of yard capacity, quite contrary to common stereotypes of the Scots personality, that John Brown & Company could not possibly have achieved what they later did.

The absolutely stunning archival photographs are the complementary bedrock on which this book is built. Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, QEII, Hood,Aquitania, were all built at Clydebank!

For me, a disappointment!

I guess it depends on what you are looking for. After seeing the stunning photo of Carmania and Franconia under reconstruction on the cover, I had expected a lot more information and photos of ocean liners under construction at the famous Clydebank yards of John Brown & Co. The book is large and many of the photos are quite impressive but it will leave the ocean liner afficionado wanting.

Just Like the Movie in Every Way

This Naruto Manga is just exactly like the movie, in every way. Which is a VERY GOOD THING! The art in it is absolutly great. And I love how this one is ani and colored ^^

I read this manga in only 15 minutes... yeah, it doesn't take very long to read. But it's great! The plot is amazing! You'll never know what Naruto will do next!

This ani-manga is traditionally-styled, read from left to right like normal manga, but it's composed of screenshots from the movie. A great book for those who like Manga better than Anime, but want to "see" the movie, this is the perfect item!

Stages of Grief for the Living and Dying

In 1969, Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross wrote the groundbreaking book, On Death and Dying and named the five stages of grief that people who are dying go through, and not in an exact order. The five stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. And, here, The Shadow Box by Michael Cristofer is about death and dying. The play earned the 1977 Pulitzer Prize and, a Tony Award in 1977.

The concept of the play is a departure from the standard storyline; it is a series of interviews and conversations of three sets of loved ones of those who are terminally ill. An interviewer is a member of the character list. The conversations of the loved ones remain separated, however, with great skill, the writer has the characters intermingle the conversations, but we view that as voices dramatically coming together. Shadow Box theme qualifies as a departure in theatre drama.

Written in late 70s, the unique and dramatic play takes place in cottages that are separate from the hospital, cottages where those dying go when there is no more help, but hope. You can't help reading this without thinking of your own mortality, or if young enough, someone close to you.

Joe is dying, and Maggie and son Steven come 3,000 miles to visit. Maggie is in denial about Joe and hasn't told their son. Aside from denial, Maggie tries bargaining with him to come home.

Brian's and Mark, a gay couple, are paid a visit from Brian's ex-wife, a whorish, rough talking, hard drinker. Mark deals with his anger knowing Brian will die.

And the third couple, aging Felicity, a cursing angry woman of about 60 is led around in a wheelchair by her daughter Agnes. Agnes reveals that Felicity is forever asking about Claire, a younger daughter who is dead. Agnes learns that the bargaining Felicity has made is to wait on dying until she she's Claire again.

There is a film version of The Shadow Box, which is directed by the late, great Paul Newman and stars Joanne Woodward, who plays the gay man, Brian's former wife, although in the film version, she is not as crude as the book version. The Shadow Box.

Another recommendation on stages of grief (for the living), is 'Night Mother. Marsha Norman's Pulitzer Prize winning book that focuses on a daughter planning her suicide and her mother going through stages of grief trying to keep her from doing it. See the VHS Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft's amazing performances in 'night, Mother (1986)......Rizzo.

Masterful Look into Death and Dying

After being asked to perform a scene from this play for a graduate-level gerontology class, I was enamored of the writing and decided to purchase the whole play for a better look.

Brian is dying of an unnamed illness, and is being cared for by his younger lover, Mark. He gets a visit by his brash party-loving ex-wife Beverly who uses humor to create her own comfort zone. Past, present and future collide as they all state their feelings about what this means to them. Beverly's no-holds-barred character adds a dry element of humor to the play, making some parts almost a black comedy.

Maggie is coming to visit her husband Joe in the hospice, and is so far into denial about it that she has not told their teenage son the truth, and refuses to even enter the hospice. Seeing it or speaking about it makes it real, and she's not ready for that.

Felicity is aged and has had so many surgeries there's not much of her left. She's being cared for by a middle-aged daughter, Agnes, who is keeping herself just this side of burning out. Felicity receives daily letters from her favorite daughter, Claire, who is apparently on her way to visit the woman who has surpassed all her doctors' expectations on her life expectancy. Through the voice of a phantom "interviewer" who speaks to the characters one by one, we find from the caregiving daughter that Claire actually died in an accident a while ago, and she never told her mother. Agnes has been writing the letters to keep her mother happy until she finally passes. However, we learn that people can negotiate their deaths by waiting for an estranged love one, meaning Agnes has inadvertently prolonged Felicity's process.

This play won numerous awards on the stage, and its TV movie adaptation won an Emmy. While this play is about death, the careful exploration gives us a look into our own fears, and the hope that acceptance can be reached while we still are here to live the time we have left. It is a masterpiece of the human experience.

By relating to the teachings in Jewel in the Lotus and not just reading it, I have been able to start healing on deeper levels. It challenges Me to stop rushing through My "process" and allow My process to take its own course... This is not just a book to entertain transformation, it is a guide into transformation... The words can be felt in a way that proves Tantra is the key into a higher consciousness, it is hard to keep on just reading, I must stop and allow My Soul to have way... Mr. Saraswati and Ms. Avinasha are true Masters.

This book is full of wisdom and wonderful practices. The instructions are clear and straightforward. The illustrations are simple, clear and instructive.
We definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a better life.
The practices of the Tibetan rites, the Rishi isometrics, the information about the cosmic cobra breath are invaluable, as are all the rituals and theoretical explanations.
A must!
