Generally good, but I'd like a bit more quantitation. Book is dated.

This book has 31 chapters over 362 pages of prose. That works out to about 11.7 pages, and so each chapter is very bite sized. The notes to the book are 57 pages long and are arranged by page and the bibliography is 21 pages and, I estimate, about 500 different sources. So, I the breadth and depth of the book are good. In fact, having this many sources reminds me of Thomas Sowell's writings. The book was written before the 1997 Asian financial crisis, and so if you are a person who reads the news every day, you can go back and see how well this book predicted things. (Not, as it turned out, all that well.)

I don't think I've read a book this interesting in quite some time. The things that he talks about in the Chinese context are the things that I am most familiar with (I've lived here for a number of years), and those observations were 100% correct. That makes me very comfortable with believing his observations about the places that he discusses with which I am less familiar (Italy/ Korea). Even though Fukuyama has a mass of detail, his writing doesn't come across as fatty and manages to keep the reader interested. (It is because of the shortness of the chapters that I kept wanting to stay up another 30 minutes to just "squeeze in another chapter.")

There are, however, a couple of downsides. The first problem is there is not quantitative analysis and testing. I know that every author thinks that for every graph/ equation s/he will cut his readership in half, and I think that this author took that idea very literally. I count not one single graph in the whole book and ONE single table. The questions that I had (and that the author did not come close to answering) were: 1. If a country does have a large number of small firms (because of trust), then does it really make any difference? (Hong Kong SAR has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world in spite of this.) 2. Can some economies get away with having a low trust society because they are small enough to do that? So, is it possible for Hong Kong to have a high level of development, but not to expect China to be able to do the same thing because it is too big to do so? 3. Can we get some quantitative idea of how being low-trust impedes economic development? He classifies Frances as low trust, but in the same chapter (#11) says that it has one of the highest GDPs per capita and is a leader in many technological fields. 4. So, again, what does low trust correspond to? 5. Fukuyama gives some praise to the quality of French bureaucracy, but does that mean that if a country like Japan succeeds at once point in time that their bureaucracy was smart but when their growth severely declines that it became stupid? Or that growth can be improved by smartening up the bureaucracy?

Ultimately, I'm not clear what the author is concluding (or even asserting). Korea is a low trust society. Japan is a higher trust society, but they both went through the Asian financial crisis. Korea came out of it, but Japan has yet to come out of it--15 years later. Japan has a lot of name brands, but Korea has fewer. Israel has almost NO name brands that anyone recognizes, but tons of companies listed on NASDAQ and more venture capital (per capita) than anyone. And its income per head is almost exactly the same as ROK's. But if Israel has no world beating companies, it must be because trust is low (mustn't it?) So now what?

Other questions: Are all voluntary organizations good? Recently in the United States we've seen Occupy Wall Street, and in American English there exists the word "community organizer." (I'm not quite sure what they do that is of value.) Does it follow that more of them would be better (i.e. a matter of degree)? Or is it a matter of type? Is the capacity for forming organizations actually even getting less? How is this facilitated/ vitiated by the internet (which was not around in full force at the time of the writing of this book)?

At a minimum, this book has some interesting history and some interesting conceptual discussions. But the actual *testing*/ demonstration/ QUANTIFICATION of the concepts with data is lacking.

Toward the end, some of his arguments got *really* strained. He talked about the failure of black Americans to reach income parity and their various social pathologies as a consequences of atomization/ fragmentation. (p.302). And he goes on to say that Caribbean blacks are less fragmented and so they do a bit better. (And the same as to why Chinese people come to the United States and make money. More cohesiveness and willingness to buy from each other.) I just don't know how much that holds water. There are other factors (none quantified), such as: self-selection, attitudes toward work, and IQ. Was social trust and cohesiveness 25% of the story? 50%? 75%? No guess.

I bought this book second hand (paperback) and it was worth the price. It was a weekend worth of reading time, and because of the wonderful ease of Fukuyama's prose, I don't regret having spent the money or the time.

The title is way too broad (so is the subtitle).

More accurate is the first sentence of chapter 28 (of 31), “In this book we have examined a variety of societies from the standpoint of one specific aspect of culture as it relates to economic life: the ability to create new associations.” That chapter proceeds to summarize the book. If I could go back a few weeks, I would tell my younger self, “Read chapter 28 first. You will then find it considerably easier to understand what he is trying to say in the previous 27.” I found the organization of the book less than optimal :)

Fukuyama says that the ability to trust and work with other people is necessary for economic success. (He calls this “social capital” early in the book but “sociability” later. I have no idea why.) In some places, people find it hard to trust outside the extended family. These places will mostly have family-owned and -run businesses. Where there is already a lot of “sociability,” it will be easier for businesses to become big.

Fukuyama spends the first 22 chapters contrasting a group of what he calls low-trust societies (France, southern Italy, Korea, and China–including Hong Kong and Taiwan) with three high-trust societies (Japan, Germany, and the United States). Some of it was interesting. Some of it was strained. And I kept wondering how much had changed in the twenty years since the book was written.

One of the book’s themes is that there is no one capitalism. There are different capitalisms in different places, shaped by each place’s history and sociology. The book says little about Africa, Latin America, the rest of Asia, or the former communist countries--though implicit in his argument is the (successful) prediction that exporting European and American laws into the former communist countries will not be enough to turn them into prosperous capitalist democracies; the suppression of civil society turned them into low-trust countries, which will make both economic and political life difficult. Fukuyama is critical of economists who fail to take into account how people and societies differ and/or who ignore “transaction costs.”

He has some interesting things to say about religion, how Americans can be both individualistic and communal, and the limits of multi-culturalism, e.g.,the lack of a strong common culture may make minorities worse off because they will not be treated as trustworthy. In fact, I thought the book got more interesting as it approached the end–though it had less to do with trust!

I waffled between three and four stars but finally decided on three, for two reasons. One, its age. Two, its over-promising title.

Fukuyama outlines how the "intermediate social organizations" of society, under the Protestant ethic, permitted the development of modern capitalist structures; whereas in low-trust societies (where you cannot depend on the corresponding person to trust you, or you to trust him), only family oriented businesses could grow, and inevitably collapsed after the second or third generation. He links the development of these intermediate organizations--guilds, PTAs, unions, volunteer activities--to the social fabric that engendered trust. He comments that a country can "spend" this hard-to-develop social capital and eventually become a rigid, non-trusting, and economically backward state. Furthermore, Fukuyama points out that the United States probably is doing just that, in nearly all intermediate social organizations, which are now surrounded by litigious critics--the educational system, Boy Scouts, union-management conflicts, the Catholic Church (which has never trusted its parishioners to have other than the standard orthodoxy, and now has suffered enormous scandal), and so forth. The lack of trust in our country is seen as pointing to our economic future, whether for good or bad.

Fukuyama is a genuinely interesting and informative writer. In his sense of fairness, he also points to examples where trust is generated, and cites them as necessary for a country to make both social and economic progress. I really enjoyed the multiple perspectives that the author brings to his task of explaining how some countries are prosperous, and some are not. He is truly an innovative thinker.

Well Worth the Money

I've been looking for a Bible story book for young kids that isn't too simplistic or too graphic, isn't cartoon-y, and has good illustrations. This set has full page, full color illustrations, and the stories are told with sensitivity for young children while being authentic. Excellent hardcover binding holds up to small, uncoordinated hands. These are spendy but I feel that the money was well spent. I'm very impressed!

I received them as a gift when my daughter was born, they are wonderful stories, two stories per volume, illustrated with beautiful full two page paintings that appealed to my infants and toddlers, and even as they grew older and started to read. The type face is a little larger than regular books, making it easier for small children just learning to read. The text is printed in an area about 3x5 inches on a single page, leaving a lot of room for the child to observe the detail of the paintings. I also found a second set, volumes 5-10, which I ordered and just received from another seller! It is an awesome set of Bible stories that will encourage your child's love of Christ and other Bible stories.

One of the best on the market for young children... even older children, especially those not familiar with Bible stories benefit.
Both pages are full pictures with alot of information visually for each age group. Also there are Cd's that can be purchased separately that go with the text. Also could be used for a beginner reading book. The text is simple and not long, leaving the reader to paraphrase and amplify as desired. I recommend them to any parent with children.

Clear and Intuitive

This book gives basics of fixed income securities in a very intuitive way. It first explains building blocks for fixed income securities. I have studied these topics in pricing and finance theory, and then I bought this book. I couldn't imagine a better explanation in such a clear way for fixed income securities. I suggest this book to everybody who wants to understand the fixed income securities. I think it helps anybody who is interested in quantitative modeling fixed income securities and who is interested in trading such securities.

It first gives the basic background, the relative pricing of fixed income securities and fixed cash flows. It then explains the price sensitivity and hedging. The author has given a good explanation for term structure models. The last part of the book is dedicated to some securities: repo, forward contracts, interest rate swaps, eurodollar and fed funds, fixed income options, mortgage-backed securities and note and bond futures.

A must have for anyone in fixed-income capital markets

I have the 2nd edition and have found it to be ridiculously comprehensive. The text is well-written and organized (I find it better than the Fabozzi texts which usually have many different people contributing, therefore naturally being less fluid and organized). This is by far one of the best fixed-income books available right now--period.

The text is pretty heavy on quant material, however, it's written from a practitioner's perspective so I've found it to be very helpful at work.

As a victim myself I can honestly say that I wish I was pulled out 4 years ago when I was pregnant.
Fortunately I got myself out 2,5 years ago.

Telecommunication systems and human-machine interfaces start employing multiple microphones and loudspeakers in order to make conversations and interactions more lifelike, hence more efficient. This development gives rise to a variety of acoustic signal processing problems under multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scenarios, encompassing distant speech acquisition, sound source localization and tracking, echo and noise control, source separation and speech dereverberation, and many others. The last decade has witnessed a growing interest in exploring these problems, but there has been little effort to develop a theory to have all these problems investigated in a unified framework. This unique book attempts to fill the gap.

Acoustic MIMO Signal Processing is divided into two major parts - the theoretical and the practical. The authors begin by introducing an acoustic MIMO paradigm, establishing the fundamental of the field, and linking acoustic MIMO signal processing with the concepts of classical signal processing and communication theories in terms of system identification, equalization, and adaptive algorithms. In this engaging memoir, Mercury 7 astronaut Cooper adds his compelling voice to the chorus of critics charging a U.S. governmental coverup of the UFO phenomenon. Written in the first person with Henderson (coauthor of And the Sea Will Tell), this book will challenge UFO skeptics and believers alike. On the one hand, Cooper states that, despite many reports to the contrary, neither he nor other astronauts saw UFOs in outer space. On the other hand, he reports that in 1951, as a young air force pilot based in Germany, he chased saucer-shaped UFOs, and that groups of UFOs passed over the base daily at speeds far superior to any manmade craft. In 1957, at Edwards Air Force Base in the California desert, Cooper was given photographs of a "classic saucer" that had reportedly landed at the top-secret military installation. He sent the photos to a Pentagon general, but never heard about the matter again. In the late 1970s, Cooper (who's now an aeronautical designer) unsuccessfully tried to launch a research company devoted to free worldwide energy transmission using Nikola Tesla's discoveries, as well as to advanced medical devices and other projects. His partner in this venture, Valerie Ransone, claims to receive scientifically useful telepathic transmissions from extraterrestrial sources. The story gets a lot weirder, as Cooper agrees to join Ransone in the Arizona desert for a telepathically arranged rendezvous with a UFO. Joining them at this alleged meeting (which was canceled) was Atlas missile aerospace engineer Dan Fry, who claims to have flown over Texas on board a UFO in 1950. Although he is not, this autobiography of Cooper (youngest of the original seven Mercury astronauts) is slightly schizoid. Half of it recalls Cooper's distinguished career as an astronaut, which included the 22-orbit flight of Mercury Faith 7 and the record-breaking, trouble-plagued flight of Gemini 5 with the late Pete Conrad. Born and raised around aviation, Cooper left both the astronaut corps and the air force after the small-group politics of mission assignments led to his being denied an Apollo mission. He has devoted his life since, and devotes the rest of the book, to exploring the question of unidentified flying objects, in whose extraterrestrial origins he firmly believes, even if he isn't a UFO cultist. He draws on his background as an astronaut to bolster his persuasively argued position that, whatever UFO's may actually be, a policy of cover-up and obfuscation isn't going to help turn them into IFO's--identified flying objects. Full of tasty nuggets for space and ufology buffs and of portraits, not all of them kind, of his Mercury fellows, as well as his self-portrayal as an almost stereotypical fighter-jockey, Cooper's book attests that, when the time came, he boldly went where few had gone before, helping blaze the trail for the many who have followed. A great book to read

This Book is great.

i worked off and on with him in Downey 1n 1966 when I was a technician on the Apollo command module in Downey bldg.290 performing integrated checkout on the bird. he was an interesting fellow and I decided to read book. He was One of the former Mercury Astronaut. the other astronauns had an agreement with a publisher not to discus their space experiences. Cooper was different he did talk about it.There was a newspaper article that Gordon Cooper “had seen a glowing, greenish object ahead of him quickly approaching his capsule” in space. Gordon Cooper the astronaut told me he did saw some object in space and it scared him. The mercury spacecraft could only carried one Astronaut into space and he was alone with that thing. I asked him for how long. He said the object came right next to the mercury spacecraft a few yards away and stayed there for about a day (20 plus hours) then it left quickly. He was sweating when he told me the tale. I asked him if it was saucer shape. He said no but it was a larger than the mercury spacecraft and he said it was bell shaped, more cylinder than bell and it was not greenish glowing, it was metallic. He wouldn’t give me any more details and dropped the subject. Gordon cooper was a back up crew member for Apollo One and 10, and then he left NASA. I guess because he would not keep quiet about the UFO he saw. Cooper spent 222 hours in space on Mercury Freedom 7 and Gemini 6 Missions

I was surprised because this conversation just came out of the blue and it was totally unexpected. I know he slipped and told me this story in confidence. I did not tell anybody about this conversation, because I did not want to discredit myself or this astronaut. This is not a common believable topic. I also thought that I would lose my security clearances if anyone found out. I tried not to remember and or think about it. I had forgotten the name of the Astronaut because I have a hard time remembering people’s name. But I remember and found the newspaper article about the green object seen by the astronaut in the mercury capsule in the internet-it jog my memory. It refers to Gordon Cooper and I am now positive it was Cooper. In Gordon Cooper’s book “Leap of Faith” he denied it happened. I guess somebody got to him or he was pulling my leg. LOL

Anyway the book is very interesting with tales he hear about of the v1 and v2 and ufo's. That being said the book really shines with his actual experience with the Mercury program. The book starts there then jumps around a bit. It is easy to read and is a must for somebody interested in the beginning of the space program.

Enjoyable, but full of wild, weird, woefully inaccurate claims

I've read pretty much every astronaut biography out there, and this one was well written, with pleasing, flowing prose and a good structure which didn't drag the reader through the astronaut's early years before getting to his two space flights.

However... and it's a huge 'however' for me... There are some inexplicable and irresponsible claims in this book. I won't even get into the UFO business, because far more worrying are the scandalous and unfounded 'revelations' about the Soviet space program. Cooper claims that no less a figure than Alexei Leanov told him that two cosmonauts died on re-entry due to pressure loss (this is flatly untrue). He also claims that he sketched out the concept of a drogue parachute, which might have saved the life of Soyuz 1 cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov (though he inexplicably fails to mention the mission or cosmonaut by name); in truth, the drogue parachute *cost* Komarov his life. The spurious rubbish about the V-1 and V-2 rockets is too silly even to repeat, and an astronaut of Cooper's standing really should know better.

The book is enjoyable and his descriptions of his space flights are very readable, but this should have been properly proof-read before publication, to avoid spreading misinformation.

Test pilot, space hero, Disney Businessman, UFOs then wierdness

Leap of Faith Gordon Cooper An Astronaut's Journey into the Unknown with Bruce Henderson is a good book with good pictures.Its an easy read. Read it in 2 days.

We see Gordon learning to fly his father's plane at a very young age. He had to use blocks to reach the controls. He solos very young and gets his private pilot license no problem. Later in life he give his mom many rides. She would just hop in. Gordo joins the Marines as a rifleman for a short stay,then goes back to school and later gets into the Air Force. He already knows how to fly so its not too hard learning for Gordo to be a US Air Force pilot. He flies many fast jets and becomes a test pilot at Edwards Air Force base.

Later Gordo gets confidential orders to report to the new agency NASA. He goes through the selection process and becomes one of the Mercury 7 astronauts. So much training and training.He goes up in the last Mercury flight and does a super job. Later he goes up in a Gemini spacecraft. Right before he has an argument with Williams the number 3 man in NASA. Gordo is pissed and buzzes NASA in a jet and Williams freaks out and almost grounds Gordo from going up but later gives the go ahead. In space there is a major problem with an almost dead spacecraft as systems are shutting down and Gordo must manually land the spacecraft. He does great and lands near the water pick up area. Almost bulls eye. Later Williams shakes his hand and says " You were the right person for the job".He gets a big ticker tape parade. He is a hero. He goes to the White House to see President LBJ and asks who classified detailed photos he took from his Gemini flight and why. LBJ says soberly "I did son". Much later Gordo learns why... he took excellent accidental photos of Top Secret Area 51.

Later we see Gordo is very bitter and mad with Deke the head astronaut and Al Shepard being cutthroat and pushing Gordon aside and not allowing him to go up in an Apollo flight. Just back up, backup, backup. He thinks he won't get another chance and retires from NASA. General Curtis Le May says Gordon may get a star (Brig. General) if he stays in the Air Force but regulations say a General can't fly a one seat jet. So Gordo retires from the Air Force as a Colonel.

Later Gordo talks about a UFO sighting he had flying a jet over Germany. Officially its explained as a weather balloon. Gordo says that's the first weather balloon I've ever seen with landing gear. He also talks about the Air Force Blue Book and UFO sightings. So far so good. I enjoy this and have an open mind. Then he talks about that we have actually been visited by intelligent ETs. OK the book is still great. I read Chariots of the Gods and still have an open mind.

Later we see Gordon in a company that discovers a 3000 year old site that predated the Mayans and Incas. He lets the authorities have the artifacts rather than his company plunder them. He states it was the legal and right thing to do. Gordon becomes a VP with Disney involved with advanced technology.

So far the book is fascinating and 5 star. Then the crapola starts. He meets Valerie Ransone who claims she gets mental communications with extraterrestrial life. Later Gordon meets a PHD scientist claiming to have taken a ride up in an alien spacecraft. Its gets even more unbelievable as Valerie says the aliens want to take Gordon up with the scientist again. Just before Cooper goes out to go up Valerie tells Cooper the aliens have had second thoughts.

I am sorry Gordon Cooper and Bruce Henderson I'm a hard science kind of guy. As an amateur astronomer of over 40 years I do believe that there is intelligent life out there. New Exoplanets are being discovered it seems monthly. There are millions of galaxies each holding billions of stars. The probability is that there MUST be other life out there. However INMO it may not look like us or even be carbon based. Who knows. At this time its too far out for me to believe that Valerie and others are getting metal communications from ETs. Show ANY proof of these mental communications. Sorry Gordon Cooper and Bruce Henderson you left me way out there in space with this one. 90% a 5 star book then very late rapid degradation to 3 1/2 to 4 stars. Gordon Cooper a great American hero with many wonderful accomplishments. I am sad Gordon Cooper passed away but at this time I can't believe in mental communications with ETs. Its too big a Leap of Faith for me.
