Wonderful Gothic Adventure

I read a lot of books. So it's always a pleasure for me to read something that's not quite like anything I've read before. Leanna Renee Hieber's THE ETERNA FILES is just such a book.
It begins just after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, when Clara Templeton, a young girl with psychic gifts, tries to comfort the grieving Mrs. Lincoln (who was very into spiritualism in real life) and instead inspires the widow to charge the government with finding a way to keep such a thing from ever happening to another US President. To find, if you will, a cure for death.
The story then jumps ahead several years and it seems that Queen Victoria has gotten wind of the Eterna project and she has no intention of letting America discover the secret of immortality before Great Britain. She has her own organization and agents, setting up a 'grand game' between the UK and the US. As the book gets started, things have taken a deadly turn as the members of the US team have been killed in strange circumstances, leaving Clara reeling and searching for answers.
I won't tell you any more of the plot, because you need to witness it unfolding. The story leaps back and forth between New York and London as various characters are introduced. There are ghosts and murders and kidnappings and dark magic, and all kinds of other Gothic goings on.
Leanna Renee Hieber's prose is well wrought and seductive and her knowledge of the Victorian era is formidable. I learned quite a bit reading the book, which always makes me happy.
THE ETERNA FILES is a darkly Gothic concoction, mixing mystery, horror, and romance. As I noted, this is my first book by Leanna, but it won't be my last. She has several series and she has mentioned that they are all interconnected. This is the first volume in a brand new series and well worth your time.

Clever, Beautiful, Creepy = I Read it Twice in 3 Weeks

I read this book 2x in 3 weeks, because I so thoroughly enjoyed it, and because my brain would not stop thinking about it.

Ms. Hieber's writing is beautiful, full, compelling and funny, and her deep understanding of all of her vastly different characters comes through in every moment. Her knowledge of Victorian London AND New York City is extensive, which she deftly uses to heighten her story without letting the historical details take over (though admittedly, as a New Yorker, it's really fun to read about familiar locations and events in NYC history as part of the plot). The characters are fascinating--especially in how the American and English teams parallel each other in actions and characteristics--and while the book is clearly the start to a series, with a pretty epic cliffhanger at the end, it doesn't feel like exposition. Or at least, the exposition and character descriptions are virtually seamless with the continuation of the plotline. There are also some decidedly creepy moments, which tend to insinuate themselves into your brain late at night when you can't sleep. Just FYI.

After my first read-through, I discovered there were references to previous works of Ms. Hieber's in "The Eterna Files", so I went back and read all three in her Magic Most Foul series ("Darker Still", "The Twisted Tragedy of Miss Natalie Stewart", and "The Double Life of Incorporate Things"), which I highly recommend doing. It made the story of "Eterna Files" even richer and more nuanced in hindsight, and made me want to read it again. Doing so had the additional thrill of a feeling of clairvoyance, since Hieber's other novels helped clarify to me, the reader, things that the Eterna/Omega characters just don't see yet. Warning: Additional knowledge makes the cliffhanger even worse.

Very much looking forward to the next installment, and in the meantime, will be reading as many other books of Ms. Hieber's as I can find! I hear "The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker" is phenomenal.

Books of Love Book Review: The Eterna Files by Leanna Renee Heiber

A very different, but unique book that definitely had me turning the pages wondering what would happen next. I really like the historical setting of New York and England in the 1880’s. Leanna Renee Heiber also writes some of the most interesting characters. The two main characters are the mirrors of one another.

Clara and Harold are the two main characters who learn that things are not always what they seem. Both of them want to find the Eterna compound, because there is a competition between the British and American to find it. Whoever finds this compound or creates it, will have the power over life and death. We are talking about things that people should not play with. Both Clara and Harold have challenges to accomplish their missions/goals. Clara and Harold have different goals in mind when it comes to finding Eterna, not realizing that their is a third player who wants it for nefarious purposes.

I really found that Clara was an interesting heroine because she has lost a lot in the search for this compound. Plus Clara friends are interesting as well because they all have gifts/skills that are important. These skills are important to find clues. Plus their are ghosts who come into the story. The ghosts find ways to contact both Clara and Rose Everhart in different ways. Also the fact that there seems to be a hidden agenda among both the American and British Government. I also like the scenery of New York and how it’s incorporated. (RN: Being a native new yorker, I really like that some of the scenery are places that I walk along, so in the 1880’s everything looked very different)

The pacing of this book was very good as well. We learn that Harold and his team have been misled as well in what Eterna really is. No one really seems to know much. Yet there are clues. Some clues are very easy to uncover. There is something much bigger going on. Yet we don’t know what that is exactly. I like that there is a mystery and that both the Americans and British want Eterna, but it may lead to something even more dangerous and dark and sinister.

This book leaves off with such a stunning cliffhanger. I can’t even say much because it was so unexpected. The twists and turns were interesting because they were done in a way that made you think we are only at the beginning of this story. Yet there is something happening. Plus I like that some of the authors other characters from her other books made some appearances.

A very good start to what looks like a promising series.

A microhistory of a religious conflict

Kaplan has done a wonderful job of detailing a religious war between Catholics and Calvinists in the late 18th century Dutch/German border of Vaals. He gives an engrossing account of how the birth of Mathias to Sara and Hendrick, both belonging to different churches resulted in Cunegonde, Hendrick's sister, trying to kidnap the baby Mathias from a baptism ceremony in a Protestant church - resulting in a full blown religious conflict later on.

Kaplan covers how the conflict between different churches was already there in Europe despite the beginning of Enlightenment and Cunegonde's incident happened in that context.

A Microhistory of Religious Conflict

Whole nations used to go to war because they considered their opponents to be of the wrong branch of Christianity. Then came the Enlightenment and tolerance, and that sort of nonsense stopped in the eighteenth century, or that’s how the story goes. Tolerance wasn’t just a way of getting along; Voltaire and Rousseau and others emphasized that it was a virtue that Christians ought to practice and it was the way a civil society ought to operate. Of course, tolerance didn’t just happen all at once, all over the place. In 1762, there was a cycle of religious violence in the village of Vaals, Catholic vs Protestant, and its story had not been fully told until now. Benjamin J. Kaplan, a professor of Dutch history at University College London, came across a huge misfiled dossier when he was searching the electronic records of the Dutch National Archive in The Hague. It was his dream of finding buried treasure fulfilled. He has from these files and other archives brought forth _Cunegonde’s Kidnapping: A Story of Religious Conflict in the Age of Enlightenment_ (Yale University Press), a surprising and comprehensive history of an isolated event (I learn here that this is called a microhistory) that throws light on the progress of the Enlightenment or lack thereof, and on human nature itself.

Because there was a mix of Catholics and Protestants in the border village of Valls, and they had business and social dealings with each other, there were friendships and even marriages between those of different faiths. And so it was that Sara Maria Erffens, a member of the Reformed Church, married Hendrick Mommers, a poor Catholic cloth shearer, in 1761. To get their marriage official, Hendrick and Sara had made different promises about their offspring, and counter-promises, but to Sara’s church went the infant son born on 13 April 1762. This seems to have been agreeable to both Hendrick and Sara, but Catholics generally didn’t like it. In fact, the Catholic priest of Vaals, Johannes Wilhelmus Bosten, may have suggested to Cunegonde, sister of Hendrick, that she was to bring the baby to him for a Catholic baptism. Whether he exerted such influence or not upon Cunegonde, who everyone agreed was a simpleton, was to be the focus of legal proceedings that went on for years after Cunegonde took action. She went to the Protestant church where the Baptism was being held, and grabbed for the baby, not once, but twice. This was a sacrilegious disruption of a sacrament, and she was arrested. Then Catholic youths stormed the tavern serving as her jail, and antagonism between Catholics and Protestants heated up. Although it wasn’t much of a war; there were riots (one person died), threats, and reprisals. Cunegonde and Bosten were put in jail for years before their trials, and then both were convicted.

Kaplan says that by the time of the sentencing, elite Protestants may have been influenced by thinkers like Rousseau and Voltaire, and that there was a feeling of sympathy toward the accused. This might not have caused any change of feeling within the populace. What really changed that was that the French eventually took over the area that had been full of religious squabbling, and declared that Protestants and Catholics were equal citizens. One can guess there was still prejudice even then, but Kaplan wisely points out that there were countless examples of members of the two religions getting along well together; this story only got started, after all, because of a Catholic and a Protestant who overcame obstacles to getting married. “Ordinarily, though,” he writes, “when Catholics and Protestants got along with one another, it left no documentary trace. The problem is a general one for historical inquiry: while conflict echoes loudly in the historical record, peace does not.” The Enlightenment did eventually come to Vaals; we have our Catholic / Protestant prejudices still but no longer wars between the camps. Religious violations of Enlightenment principles are coming from another direction these days, making the strife in this absorbing story seem almost quaint.

This book is a great idea in theory, and I was very excited about it when I found it. It is a great concept- 2000 questions with explanations. The problem is that the questions are just not very good, and some of the answers are just wrong. About 1/3 of them are absurd questions that a second year medical student should know; 1/3 are good board-prep questions; and 1/3 of them are decent questions but not nearly as difficult as what I would expect on the inservice or boards. It seems like about 1/2 the questions were likely written by someone without an otolaryngology background. The wrong answers can be frustrating; there is a link for each question to report errors, but there were so many of them that after a while I just started ignoring them.

This would be a fantastic book if these errors were corrected and about half of the questions replaced with more challenging questions. The remaining questions may not be worth the cost or time involved in using this book for review.

About the Author

Allison Trowbridge is a writer, speaker, and social entrepreneur who is passionate about empowering millennial women to impact their world. She has spent the past decade working against human trafficking and modern-day slavery, first at Not For Sale and presently with The Freedom Fund. She is a partner at Just Business, an impact investment firm addressing the root causes of slavery, and she advises social enterprises and nonprofits on strategy, branding, and partnerships. Allison is a MBA candidate at Oxford University and graduated from Westmont College in 2008. She currently lives in New York City.

A dose of real encouragement and timeless wisdom

Having lived through so many of the same experiences, pressures and expectations not too long ago, Twenty Two accurately depicts those life changing years. The book is filled with real adventures and encouragement. I found it to be relatable and funny but still hitting on all the key advice and life experiences that I want my little sisters and close friends to hear and learn from. A pre-ordered copy was waiting for my 21 year old sister, and I am ordering one for all the young women in my life that I live far from and need a boost of encouragement. I am also definitely gifting my soon to be 15 year old sister one because the advice is so timeless!

I highly recommend this lovely book. It's creative and inspiring. Allison has done a fantastic job delivering her deeply encouraging and moving thoughts and stories. A great read for anyone and everyone!
