This book was purchased for a course I had taken about NGO's and while I rarely have written reviews about texts purchased for classes I felt this one was a special exception. It is incredibly insightful and provides a great look into the world of NGO's and how they operate. A great read if you're interested in the subject.

A primer on how to start an NGO that ends up doing a better job of explaining some of what's behind the explosion of activism in recent years than anything else out there that I have come across. Anyone interested in this subject-- from academics and students, to business executives, public policy makers and journalists--will find this book highly informative and insightful.

FINALLY ! AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT NON-MUSICIANS IN JAZZ

Hardcover. Forward by Oscar Peterson. 14 page Prologue, 377 pages of text including an Epilogue, 4 page Chronology of Granz' life, 12 page Selected Bibliography, plus notes and an Index. There's also 16 pages of b&w photographs of Granz throughout his life. One great shot is of Granz and Pablo Picasso (Granz posed for Picasso several times-there's a portrait of Granz included) playing ping-pong. Another is an informal portrait of Granz in front of a drawing by Picasso of Ella Fitzgerald.

Norman Granz is perhaps best known as the creator of the legendary Jazz At The Philharmonic series of concerts, and as the founder of the Verve records label. Anyone who listens to jazz to any extent will be familiar with his name. Granz produced and/or recorded many of the jazz stars whose music is still revered today.

But what most people don't know is that, along with presenting the very best in jazz, Granz also fought stubbornly for racial equality wherever he was in the world. He presented nothing but the best jazz artists, and felt they should be treated as the stars they were. And in the time period covered in this book, that was a difficult thing to do-both here in the U.S., and in Europe. Granz once commented (while on tour in Germany) on the fact that the Nazis had lost the war, yet they wouldn't treat Black musicians on an equal basis with Whites. And that's just one instance in this fine book on Granz' stance for equality. He never waivered when it came to the music he loved-he sought out only the best musicians he could find. And his commitment to racial equality was just as intractable.

The author, Tad Hershon, has dug deeply into Granz' background, including interviewing Granz shortly before his death. The in depth research is written with a combination of intelligence, an insight and reverence for Granz and the music. Together they combine into a very readable, informative look into not only Granz, but the era and the music. This fine book should be required reading by anyone who listens to jazz, and by anyone who wishes to know more about one of the genre's greatest non-musicians, whose importance to not only the music, but for racial equality of those musicians, was almost without peer. This book belongs on every jazz fan's shelf.

Norman Granz was a pioneer in Jazz music

Author & Jazz archivist Tad Hershorn tells the story of top Jazz producer Norman Granz (1918-2001), whose social conscience was instrumental in earning African American musicians fair pay and equal treatment. Tad personally interviewed Mr. Granz on several occasions before his death in 2001. This book tells an intimate story of a man who was a pioneer in civil rights simply because of his love for Jazz music & the artist involved. Tad's archivist expertise comes into play as the book is chock full of pictures highlighting Norman Granz's career over the years.

Hershorn has managed to write a highly engaging and well-documented biography even though his subject vacillated on whether he wanted his life examined in this way. Readers may vacillate as well, on whether or not they find the enigmatic Granz to be likeable. He could be uncommonly generous, giving expensive gifts (sometimes including luxury cars) to people he favored or sending money to musicians who were having health or financial problems. He could also be arrogant, abrupt, chauvinistic, and dismissive. He was a gourmet who would think less of someone because they sought out a good burger rather than a fine French restaurant.
Regardless of likeability, readers will certainly find Granz respectable. He was true to his convictions, especially racial equality, even when his moral commitment resulted in financial loss. Starting in the 1940s, he broke new ground in the integration of jazz performances and equal pay and accommodations for the performers. In the process, he was one of the driving forces in expanding jazz from small nightclubs to major concert halls.
The cast of characters is a who's who of jazz from the 1940s-80s, which is a delight for longtime jazz fans but may be a bit daunting for newcomers who will struggle to keep up with the namedropping. Fortunately, many great artists play big roles in the story, and we gain significant insights on their lives and careers. Among them are Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Art Tatum, Nat Cole, Lester Young, and Coleman Hawkins.
Granz was also an art collector, and had a friendship with Pablo Picasso during the last few years of the artist's life. One chapter is devoted to this facet of Granz's character.
There's plenty to be learned here about jazz history, the civil rights struggle in America (and to a lesser extent, Europe), and the devotion of one man to a musical art form for which he perhaps did more than any other non-musician.

Would not recommend

It was informative. After reading and view one picture and several orbs it was very repetivative. I did not see the differnece between some of the orbs as she described. I talked to others who read the book and either did they. For example the orbs that were to be different archangles were to be slightly different colors. Perhaps the pictures did not show this. I could see an orb that may have been birghter then the others, could not identify it as a unicorn orbs. I would no recommend it to others.

Il libro non mi � piaciuto, per diversi motivi ...

Il libro non mi � piaciuto, per diversi motivi.

Innanzitutto, l’intento dichiarato del libro � di per s� problematico, ed � quello di rivolgersi a chi “la scienza moderna non la conosce", e presentare argomenti molto avanzati. Fin qui siamo in un terreno comune a tanta divulgazione. Se aggiungiamo la scelta di condensare il tutto nel formato “breve” questo comporta spesso l’uso di semplificazioni che banalizzano fino a corrompere i contenuti. Si pu� fare diversamente? Secondo me s�. A chi di fisica non sa nulla (ammettendo che esista una tale audience che compra il libro di Rovelli) si farebbe un servizio migliore raccontando i successi di Newton e Galileo, che sono molto pi� facili da capire ma contengono tutta la grandezza della spiegazione fisica dei fenomeni naturali, sono a tutti gli effetti "scienza moderna”.

Ammettendo di voler spiegare la fisica del XX secolo, il formato “breve” � inadeguato, ma comunque si potrebbero organizzare gli argomenti molto meglio di come fa Rovelli. In questo libro si parte dalla Relativit� Generale senza spiegare la Speciale. Il capitolo successivo spiega la Meccanica Quantistica in nove pagine, e un bel po’ dello spazio viene usato per comunicare all’inesperto lettore che in fondo la Meccanica Quantistica non � compresa completamente, le equazioni “restano misteriose”. Il capitolo sul cosmo contiene disegni carini, e perfino qualche numero (l’et� dell’Universo) ed � forse il migliore, anche se non � chiaro a cosa alluda il disegno “ondulato”.

Il capitolo sulle particelle mostra di nuovo un certo disagio nei confronti della Meccanica Quantistica. Tra le poche informazioni che sopravvivono alla cesoia della “brevit�” troviamo che il Modello Standard “ha l’aria rappezzata e raccogliticcia” e d� previsioni in modo “assurdamente involuto”. L'autore sarebbe stato molto pi� efficace nel comunicare i metodi e i successi della scienza moderna se avesse posto l’accento sulla semplicit� concettuale, e sul senso di inevitabilit�, piuttosto che sui dettagli. Qui — come nel caso della Meccanica Quantistica — stupisce che trovino spazio questi aspetti tecnici ritenuti poco soddisfacenti, vista l’audience a cui ci si rivolge. Anche la materia oscura viene presentata come un “difetto” del Modello Standard. Quando finalmente viene nominato qualche scienziato in relazione al Modello Standard, non si tratta di nessuno dei teorici responsabili (Glashow, Weinberg & Salam, e Gross, Politzer & Wilczek) ma viene citato solo il “nostro senatore Carlo Rubbia”.

Nella lezione successiva scopriamo che, secondo l'autore, nel “theoretical minimum” di un novello amatore c’� la gravit� quantistica, e in particolare la “gravit� quantistica a loop”. Poco importa che questa teoria sia altamente speculativa, che venga studiata solo da una minoranza della comunit�, e che sia ritenuta un approccio molto poco convincente dalla maggioranza degli esperti in materia. Un esempio di come la semplificazione estrema corrompa i contenuti, � la spiegazione dell’apparente “paradosso” che emerge dall’unione tra Meccanica Quantistica e Relativit� Generale. Rovelli porta l’esempio dello studente che la mattina va a lezione di Relativit� Generale e il pomeriggio a quella di Meccanica Quantistica, e conclude che i professori “sono citrulli” perch� la mattina c’� “uno spazio curvo dove tutto � continuo” e il pomeriggio “uno spazio piatto dove saltano quanti di energia”. Ma il citrullo qui sarebbe lo studente, perch� non si sarebbe accorto che lo spazio in cui si muovono le sue particelle nel corso di Meccanica Quantistica � anch’esso perfettamente continuo, e non c’� nessun problema a considerarlo curvo invece che piatto. La difficolt� nel matrimonio tra le due teorie emerge solo in condizioni estreme, � molto pi� sottile da spiegare — anche se non impossibile— , e qui il "guru della gravit� quantistica” toppa grossolanamente.

Il capitolo sul calore si distingue per una spiegazione particolarmente involuta delle basi statistiche della termodinamica, che si fatica a seguire. Spiccano domande mal poste che l'autore immagina il lettore si stia ponendo (“Cosa c’entra quello che sappiamo o non sappiamo con le leggi che governano il mondo?”) e una discussione sulla freccia del tempo che non fa nessun riferimento alla cosmologia, ma invece preferisce mescolare fisica e filosofia, citando Heidegger. Vi stupite perch� pensavate che il libro fosse sulla scienza moderna? Allora preparatevi per l’ultima lezione. Rovelli infatti, nell’economia del suo breve trattato, per l’ultimo capitolo seleziona “Noi”. Si tratta in parte di un discorso sulla coscienza. Quello della coscienza � sicuramente un problema affascinante, ma ancora troppo difficile per essere formulato e affrontato con i metodi della scienza, ed � un ambito molto lontano dall’expertise di un fisico teorico qual � l’autore, che per� non si tira indietro e ci dice la sua. Io in questa miscela di filosofia e scienza non ho capito molto. Mi pare per� che emerga una visione “umanistica”, lontana dalla moderna concezione impersonale dell’impresa scientifica. Ancora una volta, in questo capitolo viene tradito l’intento di spiegare argomenti della scienza in modo semplice, e viene invece offerto un flusso di idee, collegamenti e suggestioni che al massimo pu� emozionare piuttosto che informare.

La ricerca del brivido non � esclusiva di questo capitolo. In generale lo stile del libro � l’opposto di un’asciutta prosa scientifica, spesso l’autore sceglie espressioni immaginifiche che sono pi� vicine alla poesia che alla descrizione scientifica della Natura. Un estratto su tutti: “Una manciata di tipi di particelle elementari, che fluttuano in continuazione fra l’esistere e il non esistere, pullulano nello spazio anche quando sembra non ci sia nulla, si combinano assieme all’infinito come le venti lettere di un alfabeto cosmico per raccontare l’immensa storia delle galassie, delle stelle innumerevoli, dei raggi cosmici, della luce del sole, delle montagne, dei boschi, dei campi di grano, dei sorrisi dei ragazzi alle feste, e del cielo nero e stellato della notte.”

Finora vi ho detto perch� il libro non mi � piaciuto. Vorrei ora spiegare perch� il libro mi ha fatto incazzare. Rovelli consapevolmente e ripetutamente si rivolge al suo lettore, che di fisica moderna non sa nulla, e gli espone dei punti di vista personali, delle teorie o interpretazioni di cui lui stesso � autore e che sono tutt’altro che conoscenza condivisa e accettata della fisica moderna. Ne sono esempio il capitolo sulla gravit� quantistica a loop, e l’interpretazione “relazionale” della Meccanica Quantistica e Statistica. Tutti coloro che hanno a cuore la soluzione dei misteri irrisolti della Natura, sarebbero molto felici se un giorno la “gravit� quantistica a loop” ci offrisse un progresso concreto sul problema della gravit� quantistica. Quel giorno per� non � ancora arrivato, e affermare che “la principale direzione di ricerca centrata sul tentativo di risolvere il problema � la gravita quantistica a loop” � semplicemente fuorviante e disonesto.

Per concludere, leggere questo libro � nella migliore delle ipotesi una perdita di tempo. A chi interessa sapere qualcosa sulla fisica moderna, consiglio piuttosto gli eccellenti libri divulgativi di Weinberg, uno scienziato che ha avuto il dono di scoprire davvero qualcosa sulla Natura, e che � anche un bravissimo scrittore.

Wonderful read:

Basic concepts of current physics are described in a manner that is clear and evocative, with very lucid and straightforward prose. Reminds one of Richard Feynman's clarity. This book is a must read for any person who is the least curious about the nature of the physical universe we inhabit. The fact that he makes something as advanced as loop quantum gravity intelligible is quite a miracle. It also is a lesson for scientists to write as simply as possible, so as to reveal the essence of their theory.

Insightful views on physics and our role in the universe

These tightly written lectures do an admirable job of presenting most of the major themes of modern physics and cosmology. To my eye, lesson 6 focuses a bit too much on the role of our "ignorance" and not quite enough on the role of the emergence of new phenomena and physical laws in systems of high complexity involving very large numbers of components such as particles. Lesson 7 is an ambitious, even brave attempt by the author to integrate all of human experience, including our sense of free will and our esthetic response, into the realm of his understanding of science. We are, indeed, stardust, part of the universe. Yet a few nearly universal human phenomena are curiously omitted in this Lucretian view of ourselves. Examples: the human drive for fairness and justice, the religious response found in almost all cultures, the struggle within ourselves that we experience in choosing to do good or evil. But perhaps this is expecting too much. All in all, Rovelli has given us a beautiful little book that is well worth the read.

The seven day sleep system

This does work and I am amazed. I really did not believe that is would work but it does. I have been working on third shift for almost ten years straight and I have not had a decent nights sleep as a fact I can only sleep about three hours maybe four hours if I am lucky. I even have to use an oxygen machine while I sleep but that is changing for me with is system. I say try it out for yourself and see what it can do for you.

Excellent book on how to cure sleeplessness. Straight to the point, with easy illustrations, Mudras and Ajurvedic healing herbs. I love this book, just like all the other books i did read by Mr. Advait. He knows his Mudras, Healing herbs and he truly wants to help you to get better and healtier. Acknowledging that the term Third World is imprecise and even controversial, Fister, a librarian at Gustavus Adolphus College, identifies the countries covered by this compilation as those of "the Caribbean, Central and Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Asia, excluding Japan, Australia, and New Zealand." From these areas, she has selected a wide range of women writers whose works are available in English--either as the original language of publication or in translation. Of the approximately 570 alphabetically arranged entries, 303 are devoted to biographical sketches of these women, while the others treat individual literary works and themes.

Since only 28 of the writers Fister includes were born before 1900, her principal emphasis is on the twentieth century. Although the guide covers such prominent authors as Anita Desai, Buchi Emechta, Nadine Gordimer, and Jean Rhys, it focuses primarily on lesser-known figures. It also encompasses a number of writers (e.g., Isak Dineson, Elspeth Huxley, Paule Marshall) whose nationalities do not qualify them for inclusion but whose lives and writings connect them with a Third World country.

Entries on authors provide biographical and critical information varying from a few sentences to half a page and include selective bibliographies of primary and secondary works in English through 1994. An asterisk beside a title in a bibliography indicates that it has a separate entry. Such entries provide a brief synopsis of the work and sometimes include citations to critical commentary. Although only a small percentage of the articles are thematic in nature (e.g., Autobiography, Censorship, Motherhood), those tend to be more extensive than the others.

Five useful appendixes supplement the dictionary portion of this compilation: the first two are geographic and chronological lists of the authors treated, while the remaining three provide bibliographies of reference materials, anthologies, and works of criticism relating to women and Third World literatures. The excellent index refers not only to the writers, titles, and topics accorded entries, but also to individuals, themes, and events (e.g., apartheid, Cultural Revolution, mental illness) that are discussed within the entries.

Only slightly more than one-third of the writers in this guide are also included in Contemporary Authors. Although almost two-thirds are treated in the Bloomsbury Guide to Women's Literature [RBB F 15 93], those sketches generally provide very limited or no secondary bibliographies. Overlap with the two-volume Encyclopedia of Post-colonial Literatures in English (Routledge, 1994) is not significant due to some major differences in the countries covered.

Perhaps this work's greatest value lies in its identification of numerous women authors whose works are not widely known in the U.S. It will be particularly useful in academic libraries that support strong programs in comparative literature or women's studies.

About the Author
Will Hill is Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design at Cambridge School of Art, Anglia Ruskin University (UK).  Prior to entering full-time academic employment in 1993, he had 17 years experience as a freelance designer in London, during which time he worked for many of the city's leading publishers, journals, agencies and design consultancies.  He is a member of Atypi (the Association of Typographique Internationale) and has written a number of papers on typography for international design and communication journals.
